So I have been doing some consideration about getting an aquarium(40-55gal), and was wondering if anyone else dabbles in this area, or has any input as far as brand of equipment they use and reliability. Not doing anything serious, no saltwater or shit like that(not yet anyways). Have a few inhabitants in mind, water temps 78-mid 80s F.

Again, any suggestions/advice/input will be appreciated.

Dude, get a cat, it's much more fun.

I've had goldfish for the past 13 years in my home, it's absolutely shit, they kill any other fish you put in there and they shit like crazy motherfuckers so you need some robust snails as they kill the cleaner fish.

On the tank size, are you planning to put it next to a wall or in the middle of a room? If next to a wall, go small, 40 gall is more than enough. if however in the middle of a room, get as big as you can so the fish can have as much fun as possible.

Still, don't buy goldfish, they're mean motherfuckers who only desire to kill other fish. Neons and those fancy fishies are great, put those in with a few bottomfeeders and glass snails and you're good. Don't forget the treasure castles in the aquarium as well.

When buying the tech, ask for things you can easily maintain yourself (i.e. change the sponges in the water filter), if you go too pro you need to call a technician every time or bend all kinds of wires into weird shapes so you could get hold of components meant to be taken out with pro tools). Do not go dirt cheap, try to stay in the mid range.

Regarding thermometers, unless you put the aquarium in the sunlight (which is a very very very very bad idea, your fish will want to kill you) , a simple stick-on works fine, they go for like 2 dollars.

As you want to keep the aquarium pretty cool, (your room temp is around 78f im guessing) you might need multiple pumps and some small fans, in the summertime we had to change the water two to four times every week because it got too hot, we had a 30 gal tank with one pump.

Again, goldfish are shit. they take 15 gall each and kill everything.

I like cats....I know aquatic shit is a lot of maintaining, but have you ever seen a tank in someones house or establishment and were just like, "Damn, that is awesome! (or insert adj. here)" ??? Well, I want that in my living quarters. My dad had piranhas/guppies (two diff tanks of course, until feeding time anyways)when I was a kid, I loved that shit then, and I still do.
But not only that, but all the upkeep and shit is a good way to throw a "life's lesson" to my kid all the while being subtle.

Definitely no goldfish....Wanted a few mid swimming angel fish, a couple bottom sharks, and top swimming schooling fish...and of course the plecostomus=D! I have being doing research on compatibility, and aquatic plants(the fish that dont eat live plants...well at least dont mow the shit down).

Languages are so much fun.

Angel fish, guppies and bottom feeders are a great combo, add some snails to it and you're golden. A few neons would add a nice touch, too.

Are you looking at fish or terrarium stuff (snakes, lizards, turtles)? If you are looking at fish, I raised 3 Koi a few years ago from little 4" pet store buggers to over a foot in the first year. Koi are awesome because they are hardy as fuck, but man they shit like nothing else. Basically the same as goldfish just much bigger. I had this filter system in a 55 gallon tank that had 9 neons and the 3 Koi during the winter.

This pump filter is a fucking monster and it couldn't keep up with the massive amount of algae and Koi shit it faced. For a normal 55 gallon tank this is more than enough filtration and flow, I picked it up for about $130 from Petco about 5-6 years ago, you can probably get them for around a hundo now. If you are looking at a terrarium I will tell you without question build your own, especially since you have experience in wood construction. I built a terrarium that is 2'Dx4'Hx4'W with a full plexiglass front side with an automatic heating system for about $250-$300. That is a large terrarium that could house just about anything you wanted. I would point you to fish because terrariums can be a bitch to clean sometimes, but having a little Discovery channel at the house can be pretty cool too.

Are you fucking nuts? Get a cat!

All I think is-
Damn, I'm glad I don't have to take care of that!
Damn, I'm glad I can leave town and I don't have to worry about my fish!
Damn, my fucking wallet is light and I can't even put a funny cat video on YouTube!

Well, I want that in my living quarters. My dad had piranhas/guppies (two diff tanks of course, until feeding time anyways)when I was a kid, I loved that shit then, and I still do.

That's because Dad was footing the bill and taking care of that shit while you were drinking brew and petting cats with your HS buddies!

Dog is a better life lesson those fuckers are demanding! Also a bonsai tree.....your kids will never forget that life lesson.....it will out live all of you. He/she will be 80 cursing the shit outta you. "Fucking Dad and his stupid life lessons, damn tree"

See BIG ASS GREEN SENTENCE ABOVE!

Meow!

My friend had a couple large mouth bass in his aquarium. Those fuckers ate and kicked the shit out of every thing that went in the tank. They ate every crappie they could get in their mouth. Frogs, craw fish even a small mouse one time.

Build a pond and put whatever kind of fish you want in it. Dont have to be huge 4x6, 6x8 or 8x11 would all work.

Pros: less maintenance is the big one.

Cons: higher up front cost..
