In need of some book Idea's... I generally enjoy Historical Military Fiction( W.E.B Griffin, Dale Brown, Some Tom Clancy, and Vince Flynn), I have also read and enjoyed Tolkien's Hobit and Lord of the Ring series. C.S. Lewis Lion Witch and Wardrobe series. And read Harry Potter, and the Hunger Games novels. All of which I liked. Based on this I'm looking for some input from you readers out there on a new read. Any suggestions?(you say Twilight Ill kill you.)

Red Branch by Morgan Llewellyn
It's about the Hound of Ulster who is a mythical Irish hero from a couple thousand years ago. It's got a ton of Greek tragedy in it and fantastic action. Easily one of the best books I've ever read, I can't believe they haven't made a movie out of it yet. On the more philosophical side Atlas Shrugged is an important book.

Check out Stephen R. Lawhead also. He has done a lot of historical fiction, mostly with a celtic/irish slant since that's where his background is at but great books. I've always been very pleased with every single book he's written. He also did a great series on King Arthur-but not the fable bullshit you've seen on TV. I loved his explanation for Excalibur-it started out as a "sky stone"-a meteorite fragment which is why the composite metals proved to be stronger than anything else and hold a better edge.

Arthur Conan Doyle has a couple of good historical fiction ones too. Yes, you read that right the creator of Sherlock Holmes. Check out The Exploits of Brigadier Gerard-Napoleonic era, very tongue in cheek, and funny as hell at times.
Jeff Shaara is worth a read too-mostly Civil War centered in the US but good books. Newt Gingritch writes historical fiction too...never read one of his but they're supposed to be pretty good.

Bernard Cornwell is probably the best known and most published historical fiction author out there right now and he's worth a read also.

How about Military Science Fiction written by an actual marine and soldier?

Check out this trilogy of trilogies.

Heritage Trilogy
Legacy Trilogy
Inheritance Trilogy

by Ian Douglas. It's all about space marines, but it's meant to be realistic.

I'll share some of the titles of books that I have read that stood out to me. I read a lot of books, but some stand out to me in ways that I can relate.

The Alex Cross Series - James Patterson
Odd Thomas Series - Dean Koontz
Secret Life of Germs - This book will turn you into a Germophobe , for good reasons.
The Halo book series - If you like Military Sci-fi, they are very well written.
1984 - (I forget the authors name) This book is considered propaganda in some politicians eyes.
The Tao of Jeet Kun do - Bruce Lee's Philosophy book
Art of War - Sun Tzu
Starship Troopers the book - ( Fuck the movie, this book was written in the 50's. It was way ahead of its time)
Seal Team 6 - (was released last year)
Black Hawk Down - Again, fuck the movie, this book explains a ton of shit about what happened.

Currently, I'm reading Squirms, Squirts and Screams. It's exactly about the way it's titled. I have a whole bookshelf at home. I only keep a book if it stands out to me. However, if you want to save yourself a lot of money. I bought a kindle and Download
Books now. I have already saved more than I spent on the Kindle( $120).

No shit? Whatd you think? I loved em all except the very last book. The first books were a bit slow to start the story arc, but when it got going it was amazing.

Here's another one for you. One Second After by William Forstchen. It's about an EMP attack on the US and how it would be 100x worse than getting hit by an actual nuke.

Quick reads mainly sci-fi;

Ed Howdershelt
Will Greenway
David Weber
Alan Dean Foster
Darrell Bain
Kevin J. Anderson

Longer books mainly sci-fi;

Ted Bell
Vince Flynn
Tom Clancy
Alan Dean Foster
David Drake

Let me know if you want more authors.

Wow thanks guys Ill have more to read than Ill know what to do with.

Bot I liked them cause they are plausible. and you're right the last one kinda didn't finish off the series in an acceptable manor to me.

So I picked out a few books to start with I'll let you know how they are as I go. Please feel free to add to the list as it appears that most of us enjoy some of the same type of reading material. Who knows maybe you will find something new to read. Or maybe one of these suggestions will lead you to something else that will become you're new read.

Well shit if you want more...

The Lost Regiment is a 9 book series by William Forstchen about a civil war regiment of Union soldiers who are transported to an alternate dimension dominated by a nomadic band of huge aliens akin to the mongol horde. Tom Cruise even bought the rights to do a movie, but sadly he has sat on it.

Without Warning by John Birmingham is about this energy wave that sweeps the united states and basically kills everyone except for a small portion of oregon/washington and hawaii. Basically shows the entire world going into chaos.

Earth Strike is the next series from Ian Douglas. Its similar to the heritage/inheritance/legacy trilogies he did but still good. I think its on its second book. Focuses more on an aircraft carrier style ship IIRC. But yah very similar.

Starfist by Dan Cragg and David Sherman is another realistic space marine series written by a soldier and a marine. After a while it gets a little bit repetitive but still a great read. The constant Army bashing in it gets tiresome quickly though. The old "rah rah sissboom bah go marines" is so heavy you can cut it with a knife.

Check out Team Yankee by Harold Coyle. Shortish, but good. Company-level tank warfare in 1985. :-D

BTW Bot thats where my name is from. Europa Strike. the name of the satellite AI that they point at Europa.

Haven't started the star carrier series yet... actually picked up book one in starfist. and a stand alone called Embedded by Dan Abnett
