EA didn't actually request the servers to be taken down. They just told them to stop distributing their intellectual property. Taking the servers down was up until this point the choice of the people running the servers.

In their defense, the people were giving out pirated versions of the games for free in order for them to play multiplayer. The games still have single player that other people have paid for on origin and such. So in theory If I wanted to play BF2's singleplayer but didn't want to pay for the game I'd just go through these guys instead of buying it on origin.

Bad example since BF2 along with most of the others didn't have a real single player.
