Can't tell you how many people I wanted to punch in the face when I was in school who lacked any basic understanding of freedom of speech. Decided to hit up XKCD to see whats new and I saw this.

Since a US citizens right to free speech is not absolute it can get pretty complicated but the basic principle of the idea is not that hard to understand. The real founding principle as I understand it is right to speech against the government, local or federal. That's the real problem that to this day citizens of a given country face. The law was not necessarily intended to protect all forms of public expression, but ours does seem to cover a lot. I suppose restricting any speech kinda falls back to speaking against the government at some point.
The expectation is that as long as I am not on private property not only can the government not have me removed from speaking or arrest me for it. That another party can not have authorities do the same because they disagree. You want to stand in someones house or anywhere and slander someone, expect to have your ass handed to you. I did find it interesting reading up on a couple of things that schools are considered a public forum, though limited.
I guess not everyone in the US took US Government in school?
