The DARPA blast sensor discussed in this article was a project headed up by my brother. It took them less than a year to do this (the article mentions a pen to activate it but a bullet will do as well). The other in helmet device mentioned took years and more than 50 million and seems to work far less effectively in immediate assistance to the soldiers exposed to an explosion. He suffered a severe closed head injury prior to getting his physics phD and jumped at the opportunity to work on this to help soldiers in the field.

It's all medical; it has three lights on it. After an explosion a medic can check the sensors. Green -- good to go. Yellow -- pull the guy back for observation. Red -- get him the hell out and begin treatment for head injuries. Once at a hospital the blast information can be downloaded to help the medical team. Many of the brain injuries that are causing long term issues were never picked up in the field, and this is designed to help catch them while something can still be done.

It kind of reminds me of something they did on Mythbusters a while back where they were checking how an underwater blast would affect fish. It's a neat concept.
