Lockheed’s New Laser Blasted A Hole In A Truck From A Mile Away

I've known about this stuff for the past couple of years but its all of the people that leave comments on news like this that really make me roll my eyes. Ranging from bitching about how the F-35 can never carry one due to not having enough capacitors and etc. Its a chemical laser. The biggest problem with it is the amount of chemicals you need to make it work. Now I'm pretty sure they will either solidify those fluids and\or miniaturize them enough to get them on fighters within the next 10 years.

Yes specifically a lot of the Jalopnik reporters are not very good at understanding technologies like this.

Also even though I do check Jalopnik and most of the Kinja sites. They seem wildly opinonated and mostly jaded. Especially the Jalopnik columnists (if you can call them that) that want you to buy these cheap shitty money pit cars.

what was that fucking movie that had Val Kilmer and I think Corey Haim in it early '80s bout that laser? in the end they blow up a house by popcorn with the airborne laser? anyone know what movie im talking about?

Meh, i have a shotgun that would do more damage than that. call me when your billion dollar lazer beam can do a billion times the damage as my $1.00 shottyslug

That's amazing. We must outfit the airforce with shotguns. They could use rocksalt for warning shots.

This is only really news in that they did this combining fiber lasers, the MTHEL was shooting down volleys of mortar shells (6+) almost 10 years ago before the plug was pulled for some reason. The MTHEL videos are amazing assuming the results were legit, but considering how many energy weapon systems have gone from concept to development to deployment in the past ten years I think it was probably legit video. The Navy is a cunt hair away from deploying rail guns (most new vessels now have multiple reactors for exactly this reason). I think every liberal babyboomer owes Reagan an apology for their star wars jokes about the program that fathered in all this technology. I still think MTHEL would be a better alternative to the Iron Dome program and it was developed jointly with Israel. I want to say we've had Laser systems installed in jumbo jets for 20 years to shoot down ICBM's. Hopefully it takes China at least 5 years to steal these systems.

Mac do not confuse Star Wars funding with research on energy weapons. While they can be related at times in many cases the research was separate. Star Wars was a money pit that was better served as a PR stunt for getting the USSR to chase ghosts while the research was funded before and after the program died. Some significant advances in energy weapons have happened relatively recently due not to Star Wars program research but changing understandings and abilities on the energy front.

Star Wars was the serious inception of modern energy weapon systems, the whole purpose of SDI was to down Soviet ICBM's with satellites firing conventional or energy weapons. That type of weapon system is in all likelihood operational at this point given the huge number of DOD satellite launches since the early 80's.
