first off yes i know how to shoot. yes i know about gun saftey. i currently don't own a gun i just go shooting with my brother in law who has an all out arsenal. so anyone got some suggestions im trying to stay in the $200-250 or lower. my brother inlaw just got a 9mm that is nice and light that i like. i know a lot of you all are military of some sort so figure youd have some good advice for me thanks

IDK in that price range. But if you go $350-500 you can get a SIG sauer or Springfield XD. I don't like the XD though. The trigger has a safety on it that always gave me a blister on my trigger finger.

bah just got get a hi point 45 acp or 9 mmm most are under 200 bucks if it gets stolen atleast u dident invest in it mostly for protection nice heavy duty u can throw it around or at someone OR u can get ur self a nice 22 or something for that price

i dont plan to buy one till i get my xmas fund out so around november and that should be around 1000 but i got a few peices i need to up grade on the pc so should leave me around 500. what would u suggest on that alaskan

A handgun in that price range isn't something worth owning IMO unless it's a .22 lr. I would say save a little more and look in the $350 - $500 range. What are you wanting it for? If it's just target shooting and home defense I would recommend a full frame like a Glock 17 or a full frame M&P 9. Both of them are incredibly good guns with proven track records. The new gen 4 glocks have a redesigned grip and is a huge improvement over previous versions.

home protection is what im most getting one for.

As a note, best home defense firearm is a shotgun.

Like turbotoast, I too recommend a full size for shooting or home use. For a larger caliber I suggest a .45 RIA 1911 at around $400. Smaller calibers to consider are .40, .357 SIG, and 9mm. There are even smaller calibers, but they are better suited to concealed carry purposes. All of the smaller calibers listed have options under $500 for polymers. Closer to $600 for steel frames.

Make sure you try before you buy. Many combination shops/ranges offer rentals at super affordable prices.

Shit, they still have decent ones in that price range. How about SCCY CPX2C? Or the EAA Witness, the Kel-Tec TP9 or 11? Or the SAR BP6? Also there are various CZ clones that are very good in that price range like the Canick 55. Also, don't forget about Kahr they have a great selection of in that price range.

yes thought bout just getting a shotgun but think of getting my conceal carry permit as well if my bro in law would sell me one of his 18" barreled 12gs id be in business but hes apparently waiting for the zombie apocolyps. got any links for those guns sixer that i could look at

The SCCYs are not the prettiest things I've ever seen, but they're built like a little tank and are reliable as hell. The Kahr's in this price range are reliable and durable, but not what I'd call comfortable to do extended shooting at the range. The EAA witness is a great one to start with due to the price, design, and reliability. It's also a CZ clone that fits the hand really well, is accurate, and reliable. I love Bersa's as well. The Thunder in steel is a little tank and extremely easy to point shoot accurately, the polymer version is light weight and a light trigger, and slim and easy to carry. The only negative I've ever heard about it is that some don't like that it will not fire if the magazine is ejected.

i have a hi point i take hiking and have in my cab it fires nicely and takes a beating and does well at the range it just dont have any mounts for anything and plastic mags :D
