Mount Vesuvius caused more Allied bomber losses than a Nazi air raid

Does this really happened? -because I never heard about that
 
Deke Slayton (astronaut) was a bomber pilot in Italy at that time. He talks about Vesuvius in his autobiography - quite a sight.
