Some after the fact screenshots. I did a horrible video that I am not posting and would be too long and boring anyway.

dam....i never got in to orbit.....you got back from the moon....great work.....

Orbit is difficult for a newbie in career mode. Honestly the tech tree is kind of stupid. There is a lot of science to be earned on the ground and as such airplane should unlock sooner than advanced rocketry. Career mode is my favorite though it gives you a reason to do everything. I tried science mode the other day and I unlock the entire tech tree in 8 hours so at that point you might as well just go sandbox.

If you're jumping straight into it by the time you struggle into orbit you will have gotten enough science two made it a lot easier to get into orbit. And Apollo style mun mission is way harder than a Kerbal style one. To do this I finally had to learn how to do docking orbits. Which I've been avoiding for a very long time.

I've been to every planet in the game. This lander was built before they had drilling rigs and other neat s*** they have now:

@smokerob79 Just going to do one better. This design (which is late stage anyway) is so overkill for the game. I landed it on "Mars" (Duna) for giggles.

The bad news is I should have attached parachutes to the lander. I had to use Ascent stage fuel to land safely. It on its own does not have enough fuel to land or take off. With parachutes very little fuel would be used for landing. Would probably have enough to take off. The descent stage would be destroyed in flight.

DAM YOU....DAM YOU!!!....now i WANT to go back and start playing this again!!!!.....after i just bought almost 40 games in the steam autumn sale...(sigh)....after i get done with the DLC for bioshock 2 and 3 i will be back to playing this for SURE!!!....i just wish they had more games like this when i was a kid to get people in to science....maybe a kids mode for this game would be a good idea....even for me i was lost for the first 8 hours playing it....what was crazy to me is the fact i had good parts to a high end rocket off the bat but nothing else to build with (like having a crew compartment but no rocket engine at the start).....

I am going to do a video tomorrow or soon (I want to redo it). But here is the gist of it:

Step 1: Open one goo canister on the ground. Then fly. Open the other goo canister at 13000m and do a crew report. Use that science to buy Tier 2 parts (both).

Step 2: Normally I build a suborbital rocket but skip that! Attach a thermometer and do more pad science. Crew report on the ground and the thermometer. Recover the craft. This should give you enough science to buy Tier 3 rocket parts:

Step 3:
After buying Tier 3 rocket parts, upgrade the launch pad only.
Build the rocket below. 2 stages, bottom stage russian inspired 3 engines is fine no need for the 4th.

Take off at 100% throttle. At 100 m/s speed pitch over 10 degrees east (D key, 80).
At 20,000 Meteres altitude pitch over 45 degrees (going east its 90 on the ball).
First stage should run out about now. Pop it off and cut throttle to 0.
Check your map you should have an Apopapsis over 70,000 meters if so wait til your at 70k (IF NOT THROTTLE UP A BIT UNTIL YOU ARE).
At 70k pitch over to the middle of the ball headed east and fire the engine.
Using your map view keep a roughly steady Apoapsis until a Periapsis appears. Get the periapsis to 70k plus.

That's orbit. It's a little finicky getting that last bit but when I did this I had plenty of fuel left to deorbit. Orbit to Apoapsis and point retrograde on the balls. Burn until the periapsis is 40k or so.
Separate the stage, keep pointing retrograde. Deploy chutes at 10k.
