First let me say this: Minecraft is driving me fucking crazy! It's like you have to learn another damn language to do anything, and it makes me yearn for the simplicity of ProCon in managing a server.
OK, with that over, a little background. Lots of kids at my sons' school want to play online, but as they are 2nd - 3rd graders all the parents are concerned about online interaction, so I rented a server from NFO with the idea of setting up a controlled, limited access, kid safe server. My problem comes in understanding the Minecraft language -- everyone seems to assume a great deal of knowledge in and background with Minecraft. So I need some guidance.
First, from what I understand, to run plugins to moderate language and general gameplay I must run a craftbukkit server. The craftbukkit at NFO is 1.6.4. Should I downgrade their Minecraft or just go with the craftbukkit beta (1.7.2), and would that beta work with Minecraft 1.7.5? Is it even necessary to run the server as a craftbukkit one to use the plugins?
These are kids with very tech-unfriendly parents. The easiest path is going to be the best.
Second, is there an administration interface (like ProCon for Battlefield) that would aid in running things? I want this to be as straightforward as possible as I would like another parent or two to help me out.
Third, plug in help. I want to make the server password protected, have a language filter, and perhaps to limit certain actions in game so that kids can't trash what others do. Any suggestions? I know I can go find some, but any experience here is welcome.
Game modes, mini games. Any suggestions/guidelines?
Again, any suggestions are welcome, but I just need some information and overall the Minecraft community is against straightforward, succinct answers.
