Now that I have a moment I will elaborate. NS2 since I never player the original, is designed around the commander as a solution to strategy management. However in a strictly casual FPS its a completely useless headache.
In an FPS like Battlefield there needs to be a real rewards system to following the commander other than a few points and overall victory. When a squad follows a commander there should be some life altering benefit that causes them to in the future work together through them. Ammo drops and air strikes help but when things go bad all the commander is is an extra person to blame and there is so much whining about commanders. If it wasn't for VOIP the commander wouldn't be much of a leader.
You could redesign the concept to be in the hands of squad leaders. A squad who benefits their team by spotting might get a UAV to cover them for spots. When multiple squad leaders designate the same objective an air strike can be given. So on and so forth. Reward team play and team play will naturally occur. Its no garuntee of victory but team play can be achieved with or without a command model.
