Thought I'd include an icebreaker on the table for people to get stuck into while they're waiting for things to start. I need a bunch of smart folks to check the answer and as I don't know any, I thought I'd ask you lot.

How many squares are there?

I thought so too I had ended up with 37 before finally figuring the 3 x 3's but upon recount after recount i ended up back at 40 with my 41 no where to be found. You have the overall 1, 2 in the middle, 8 little ones, 16 main ones, then the 2x2's add up to 9 and the 3x3's come in at 4. Thats 40.

40 was what I got:

a rectangle can be a square, but a square can't be a rectangle. there are more than 40....

Uh... we are looking for squares. By your correct definition there are more than 40 rectangles, but not more than 40 squares. You literally just said a square can't be a rectangle and your additional shapes are not squares :p I know its confusing, have to love English for that one or shall I blame math.

I blame math AND english applied to math. We were looking for squares.......... fuck brain teasers!

There are 41 squares in the original post, you guys are forgetting to count Rails.
