Steam checking for available updates??!!

Does anyone else have this issue or is it just me, where when I start up my computer and Steam checks for updates for literally like a minute? Is there anyway to get rid of that? It is not the speed of my computer or drive, but it has been doing this for many months. It is annoying.

takes about 3 seconds for me but yes every time i restart my pc it checks for updates

The only problem I get every now and then is steam saying that I'm not connected to the internet on start up even though I am. I just run as admin and it seems to work fine. Never had an updating issues like that though.
