Honestly, I think the SOPA 'protests' are going a bit overboard. The writing isn't perfect, but something does need to be done about online piracy.

Its not overboard until we start shooting people. I play be Indonesian rules. Beating citizens with concrete balls as punishment for trying to ride on top of a train is no where near as bad as shooting people.

but something does need to be done about online piracy.
all this online piracy shit is retarded... every one is still making millions of dollars from music and movies. its fine where its at right now. IMA PIRATE BITCHES!

Few people make millions. Many artists aren't as fortune, due to piracy.

As someone who takes the threat of piracy seriously. You have to look at the "as fortunate due to piracy" thing not being directly connected or measurable as none of this is accurately measurable. The additional threat to musicians is one thing, but most unknown musicians are not much more pirated than they were in the 80's. Its hard to get noticed, but you cant blame piracy for that, that actually gets you noticed for better or worse.

Comedian Louis CK joined the ranks of other known people to make 1+ Million with DRM free directly distributed content (read a single performance) that was also the victim of piracy naturally. When the RIAA and the record company isnt taking your money your losses will probably be less than your income and your income will be higher than it ever would have been.

Piracy is out of control, but its also a member of the blame game. I buy my movies, music and games. I do have a guilty history with software that exceeds many months pay though.

The idea behind SOPA and PIPA is fine but the actual laws as they are written is awful. SOPA will allow any claim, substantiated or not, of copyright infringement or piracy to shut down a website. As it was originally written it would be completely removed from DNS servers and search engines.

I'm in no way a liberal hippy but to claim that artists are losing millions to piracy isn't justified. It's funny that artists and musicians aren't the ones who are throwing their support behind this bill but instead it's the MPAA and RIAA. Why do you think that is? Why was the law written a Congressman from Texas with no knowledge of the Internet or its working? The answer to both questions is painfully obvious, money. The Senators and Congressman who get their campaign coffers filled by the MPAA, the RIAA, and their lobbyists have backed it even though they know nothing about it.

Like I said I'm against piracy and I've made my feelings about it known here in the past but these bills just aren't the answer.

Soldier hit the nail on the head. Piracy is indeed a problem, but, to quote an ex director of the NSA "the internet is a fragile system that must be approached with a scalpel, not a sledgehammer" and lets face it, these two bills are FAR from a scalpel in how they function.
