A Swiss supermarket chain called Migros has just launched a new program that aims to collect and save old, used CDs and DVDs from the landfill. These discs will be shredded into granular remains and recycled into a slew of new products, including - get this - motorcycle helmets. Apparently, these little spinning discs are made in large part from polycarbonate plastic, which is easily recyclable and is useful for the creation of many new items for automotive applications due to its inherent strength, impact resistance and desirable optical qualities.

Polycarbonate plastic is often derived from petroleum, which could be one more good reason to recycle as much of it as possible. Collection points will be set up in locations all across Switzerland. If the program is successful an old Madonna CD or Brad Pitt movie could be made into head gear.
