...but it was worth it. You can imagine how the builder-grade carpet looked. I have dogs, cats, and an 8 year old. I went for durability and something that would add a little color to the room. The good news is, you save a TON of money if you learn how to do it yourself and, over time it will cost much less than re-carpeting every 7-10 years. It's crazy how I got the long rows to fit with no tile cuts at either long end...1/16" spacer? nope. 1/4"? nope. 1/8"? nope. 3/16" spacers...BAM everything fits. Got lucky there! Many thanks to the house builder's tile-guy for leaving a perfectly squared off area for me. This would have been a nightmare if the original tile was crooked in any way. I'm not the original owner...I would have never put a carpet "island" in my living room. This is my first and probably last tile job for a very long time!

@Snakebabies I will be moving the furniture back in tomorrow LOL! On the other hand............tomorrow is Halloween! Maybe some long tables and rows of chairs with broomsticks flying above hahahah.
This project took me a weekend and a little bit of time each night after work for a week. I'm not fast. I called a guy on Craigslist after I bought the material and he wanted $800 to install the area which is 13x18. Then I started thinking of all the stuff I could buy with $800 and decided to do the job myself. A few tools, grout and mortar cost less than $100. Well...now I realize $800 was a very fair price. It is a lot of messy work.

looks damn good man! youre not kidding on cost savings there, cost me 500-600 on materials to tile my house by myself, got an estimate of 1500-2000 to have someone do it for me.

And I don't know about you but there is a lot of pride in doing it yourself. I've gained a real appreciation for it that would not be there if I paid someone else to do it. Thanks!
