Uploading to Youtube

Hey TBG,

I want to start uploading some clips to youtube for you all. I've never uploaded game footage before. It looks like some of you have some experience at it. I'm just wondering what the best way to go about it is. I figure 720p is good enough to view, but I'm not even sure how to upload to 720p or 1080p. Is there a good resource around to help me with this process?

I tried doing a little forum searching but couldn't find anything, so sorry if this a bit of a repost.

I've been recording with dxtory, using the dxtory video codec on YUV410(4x4) - Low Quality and compression and a FPS of 30. The files I'm getting are roughly 30-50 gigs and around 20 min long.

Obviously I need to compress them more before uploading to youtube. What's the best way to do so?

Thank you,

Simon

I wish I had time to write out some instructions for a particular program but im on my way to work.

Windows Movie Maker would make quick work of it just try to choose the best quality wma it allows. Not ideal but it gets the job done.

Handbrake will do H.264, youtubes native format and my favorite format something in the way of 20 Mbps would look okay (better than it will look by the time youtube rapes it) I like 30 Mbps.

Tell you what grab handbrake put in a file, on the right hit normal profile, then go to the video tab H.264, 30 fps, and under quality use avg bitrate say 20000 (for 20 Mbps, this in Kbps) or try the file size and one instead and do say 500 MB if you think you can manage to upload that. For a 20 minute clip that small migth be of acceptable quality. Just try it watch it before you upload, adjust accordingly.

I normally use Sony Vegas Movie Studio so no help there :p

Alright, just downloaded handbrake. I'll work on this. Thanks for the advice.

Um, so I tried to do what you said. Picked normal profile, H.264 30fps, tried a 250000 bitrate first, and I got an error message when I added the source video file. It says

'No Title(s) found.

Your Source may be copy protected, badly mastered or in a format which Handbrake does not support. Please refer to the Documentation and FAQ.'

I'm looking into it, see if I can figure it out on my own. Anyone have any advice though?

might not like the dxtory codec. Try windows movie maker instead if windows media player can play it wmm can too

Ok, so I used windows movie maker. Cut one of my videos in half so I'm currently uploading the 1st half of it. It's a 1.55 GB file and about 10:30 long, and says it's gonna take about 11 hours to upload. Does this seem about right? Again, this is the first time I've done this, so does that seem standard? Or is there a way I can bring that time down some?

Thanks

For 1.5 gb yeah depending on the connection. You can try changimg the quality at render time. WMM doesnt make it easy but look around its like make movie then save to file and somewhere in there. But it also has an upload to you tube feature id see if it has a youtube preset.

Yah. The first half of one of my videos should be uploaded by tomorrow morning EST. Thanks for the consideration guys. Will link when it's up.

Donya Fortress First Half - YouTube

It's finally uploaded, still processing so higher quality isn't available yet. Not sure how long it takes to process. May upload the 2nd half this weekend, ended up 104 and 23 or something like that. This is just one round on Donya Fortress. I recorded a few more rounds while on comms with mates, but with how long these take to upload I'm not sure I want to upload much more.

I may try twitch.tv instead. That way I can stream and it automatically uploads your footage for you.

Thanks

Si

If you're using FRAPS it stores video uncompressed. Reencoding can cut the file size by a factor of twenty on a good day.

Oh and you lie, only because thats not true. Don't think there is too much info on the basis of the fraps codec but analyze any file and you will see the average bitrate for 1080P 60 fps is 1500 Mbps. I get around 4GB per minute when uncompressed 1080P 60 would be slightly over 15 to 22 GB a minute depending on what color model is used. Just a sign there is some compression without drawing some of the only facts I can provide you with past that.

From their website:
Why is the AVI movie generated by Fraps so big? How can I reduce the size?
The filesize is big because there isnt enough time to encode the movie while the game is running. The movie frames are slightly compressed, but still require a large amount of disk space due to the high resolutions. After you have finished capturing you can convert the clips into a compressed format using a video editing program. Probably the easiest one to use is Windows Movie Maker which is included free as part of Windows Live Essentials. It allows you to easily edit your clips and add text and other effects to your film. The end result will also be compressed into the Windows Media Video (WMV) format which can be played back in most media players.

Also note that there is a checkbox for lossless rgb that is unchecked by default. Hopefully this doesnt come off too wrong rails. I go through this 100 times a year with people. Blame Beepa there used to be 0 information about Fraps out there and they officially dont have a forum though there is one out there.

Fraps trades the need for processor overhead with that of needing massive disk bandwidth. Playclaw is more adjustable (2 was anyways 3 has slightly less options). Dxtory actually lets you choose a codec which I always thought would be nice. I only used it once though and the choices are limited initially you can add more.

Nah, he had marshmellows, smores, a good fire going and some comfy blankets; it was a perfect camp site. Thanks for taking the time to upload the vid Sidtri.

Cotton you dirty fucking whore. Whats wrong are Canadians just born building computers and taking random tech advice from Americans? No nerds in Canada Eh?

PS: Hows the cooler did you RMA it?

:D

God - the customer service staff at Zalman sucks - no reply from them in 2 weeks, so I emailed them and they are like, we mailed you a new fan - it will take up to two weeks, be patient -

I reply back, well that's good - but I never got any response back etc - or any RMA number -

they were like - we just send it out - no need to any RMA - no tracking -

Great customer service!

lollers.
