I'd make sure you read about the overclocking if you plan to do all that stuff though. Ivy bridge gets too hot because they use thermal paste inside the chip :(
 
I have the H100 cooler, and if I did OC. I wouldn't go higher than a modest 4.4-4.5.
Worst part is, I won't get to even play with this stuff until the End of may. Lol
 
Yeah well on air at 4.5ghz they are saying its hitting 100C and on a closed loop like that your probably going to hit 60 which is where i am at on air.

On sandy bridge they soldered the heat spreader to the chip on ivy they used shitty paste.

True, time will tell if that design can last 3 years or not. And if does, then I'll pick up a back end generation of Ivybridge. I though about getting a Sandy, like I said. Time will tell. :)
 
Congratulations. I hope you'll show us some benchmarks once it's up and running. It sucks you won't be able to use it right away though.
 
Yes, As I never have benchmarked a computer before(I know weird right) PCmark for a benchmark?

I also was thinking of getting some Soundproof foam to see if I can knock a dew DB of the insane loud H100 fans. But, I do want get the Scythe Typhoon 15 series fans to replace the stock jets engines that corsair packs with the H100.

Take a look at the 120mm Scythe Slipstreams SY1225SL12L.

It's half the airflow, but also half the dBa of the typhoons

I looked at the slipstreams, but the Typhoon's are the only ones that maintain a Decent CFM while trying to push air through a radiator.

I also have a extra 200MM fan that would normally mount where the 240mm radiator sets. Instead of a push config, it would have to be set up as a pull config. I got to run temp tests after everything is installed to see which air configuration is best between both worlds, noise & cooling.

So there is signifficantly less surface area to cool as most of it has been replaced with thermal paste. Just tried to find the article and reading around it seems that yeah IB overclocked runs at a much higher temp but the chip is designed to run at a higher temperature. And the best method of cooling seems to be heatsink :)

I've seen some say the Heatsink is better, but is better for the overall ambient temperature inside the PC? I haven't seen anyone address this. If I have some good free time I'll run both, heat sink and Water measurements. I'm trying to get some good readings to write some nice Hardware reviews for the TBG website.
 
That's be sweet mate :). The chip has only just really become widely available. It could be that I read a review about a particular bad chip but I'm planning to get my hands on IB soon so it'll be interesting to see what you come up with :)
 
Ivy Bridge is nice, but honestly I couldn't care less about any more quad-core CPUs. Intel needs to bring 6-core & 8-core chips to the "mainstream" (meaning <$350). I don't care how they do it but that's what I want from them.

I'm personally drooling over SSDs--a pair of OCZ Vertex 3 240GB's and a pair of Onyx 32GB's for $456 after rebate. HDDs are definitely my weakest part.

Anyone who wants to argue that an 8 core would be useless needs to throw their i7 in the trash, if 8 threads is too much for you than your hyperthreading isn't need either. People get hung up on a single application being used they forget you have an operating system, background processes and maybe even other serious applications going.

Remember BF3 doesnt use a specific number of threads, it just throws em out as its appropriate. CPU's are well beyond games at this point. Whats nice is I can do intensive CPU work while playing BF3 and almost forget i had it running.

An i7-3930K + Gigabyte GA-X79-UD3 is 50% more than an i7-3770K & good Z77 motherboard, but a $500 upgrade is much easier to stomach than a $750.

I've been waiting since Westmere. :(

Well you already know your going to be waiting til at least broadwell or skylake. There is a reason why 6 and 8 core cpu's are expensive and its not just the unnecessary markups. The larger the circuit on a given process size the lower the average yeild. The wasted silicon gets added to the price of the cpus. There is little stopping them from bringing it to a mainstream Haswell platform but i don't think we will see mainstream prices until the next shrink.
 
Except that Westmere never made it to quad-core (for consumer systems) and LGA2011's 6-core chips are 8-core dies. And supposedly, it's not on Intel's near future roadmap either. Until they either make a massive leap in single-thread performance or overclockability, any old i7 is more than sufficient. While I appreciate Ivy Bridge's lower power consumption and possibly better overclocking, I don't appreciate the premium prices on what should be cheaper (if less mature) CPUs.
