just any current and up comming games. will the quad core hold up for a couple years yet? cause i know newer games have been recommending at least 6? hes not all hardcore like we are he said all the gear hes running now on the PC is about 5 years old, is tired of gaming on a laptop so decided to upgrade finally.

The builds that Avery78 and Krazy_fanboy posted are good. I'm running an "old" system I built a couple years ago. And, as has been stated, get a good cooler.
AMD FX8350 8 core
Gigabyte GA-990FXA motherboard
EVGA GTX 680
16gb GSKILL DDR3
Water cooled

I play most games with no problems. BF4 runs very well. So, those 2 systems should work well for you. And they are within your budget.

@ZaarKahn you have what i am currently running only i have a 670 in now cause my 7970 went out. and only 12 gigs of ram cause i stick went bad. ill go to the parts picker and play around some more. thanks for the ideas yall

Yeah BlitZ I think if you upgrade the memory and GPU you will be fine. Mine works very well...heh, it should be good for another 6 months...I hope.
