AMD Radeon R9 290 Review: Fast And $400, But Is It Consistent? - Digging Deeper Into Hawaii

Damn, this is so good for so crazy cheap, that I'm actually considering buying it instead of the 780 Ti which I was holding out for. Noise is a non-issue because it's going under water, so I'll be able to do some sweet clocking too with the less-shit-on voltage than Nvidia, and as an added bonus LTC mining during downtimes? Sign me up...

I don't know how I'll swallow the shitty AMD drivers, but I'll have to somehow.

I'll wait a few more days to see if there's any miracles from the green team, but I seriously doubt it. Better luck next year I guess? :-S

wait bro, that stupid consumers friday weekend and xmas is coming up bro! You dont sit down at a poker table without some tricks up your sleeve to counter the competition!

Its about freaking time! Nice. I would put it under consideration if it wasn't for the recording feature with Kepler. Sure I could use another direct to H.264 solution such as tying into Quick Sync on my Intel chip (take that AMD fans yet again :p) or just take the hit doing it the old fashioned way which would put my framerate near the 770.

AMD definitely needs to follow suite on the recording in Catalyst. Even if they don't have a dedicated encoder onboard with their hopes for Mantle they NEED a recorder compatible with Mantle.

Definitely an option for those with a little bit of cash to spend but still a budget to stick to. Just glad they finally got the details out on this its been a pain trying to guess.

Im hoping to see the Non Reference GTX 780 drop below $399 , which we will see it eventually when the 290 are widely available. The MSI lighting is my favorite.

Now that AMD has come up big, I cant see people even considering the 780 "TI" at $699, sure it will outperform anything else..but not by much. Wee will see the result tonight , after midnight when the reviews are up!

.

I definitely agree!

The 780 Ti won't outperform the R9 290. It already beats the Titan in a few select situations, and when you figure overclocking... forget about it.

And I mean, it's HALF the price. Same or better performance for HALF the price. WTF?!

I have to disagree slightly , just look at the chart. The GTX 780 TI in comparison to the Titan, has 192 more cuda cores, 16 more TMUs and a 1 GHz (Effective) memory clock advantage, I think it will take a 15% lead over the 290X in many games, 18-20% with overclocking. The memory Clock advantage which equal a greater bandwidth, is the main factor along with the added Cuda cores and TMU.

Still, coming in at $699...the TI is still not worth it, the 290 is priced too aggressively for anything else to matter, unless you need a specific Nvidia compatible feature.

Okay, 780 Ti might be slightly better but it's going head to head, we're talking less than 10% my guess overclocked R9 290 vs 780 Ti on average. Worth 50%/$400 more (disregarding power/heat/noise/exclusive tech and apps)? You decide...

Also, a nvidia shader "core" isn't the same as an AMD shader "core" - their architecture is quite a bit different from what I've gathered... so comparing them like this really isn't meaningful at all. You could only compare like this nvidia vs nvidia and AMD vs AMD between their generations.

The only comparison is applications/games FPS...

Heat while its almost tempting to compare core count between brands with that chart HE was only comparing the 780 to the Titan.

I am curious how at 1080 to 1440P how the lack of rasterizers will hurt the 780 Ti against the 290X. Performance of a unit on each model is likely another apples and oranges bit but I remember back in the day when we were getting 1 per pipeline and the idea of having more unified pixel and vertex shaders per was crazy.

Fuck, it's better than I expected. Now I'm really wondering what I should get :-S ...

Just picked up a 290X. Not sure if I'm deaf or whatever, but I do not notice the noise of the card in Uber mode over my open ear headphones while playing. It is quite similar in noise level to my old EVGA 560 TI. Was thinking I definitely needed to upgrade the cooler or run a water loop but now I'm not so sure.....
