Accordeing to Tweaktown, the launch will be coming very shortly.

October 18, 2010.
This is the day AMD will unveil the new, now AMD branded, Radeon 6850 and 6870 cards. The 5k series was a great card for performance per watt, which has been AMD's strategy with the last generation of GPU. This generation kicks it up a few notches...
The 6870 will compete with the current 5850.
To compare: a 5850 has 1440 stream processors, 725MHz core, and uses 151W of power. The 6870 will beat the current 5850, while only using 960 stream processors, an increased 850MHz core and uses >150W power. While it uses more power, it has cut down 30% of it's stream processors and can still beat a 5850... it will be interesting to see what a full 1400+ stream processing GPU from AMD can do.

I just can't believe current pricing on the 5000 series. Within 6 months of the 4000 series launch, the cards were half off of their launch prices. The 5000 series have stayed at the launch price the whole time. I was hoping to have a $140 HD5850 by now, but they are still around $250-260 for the cheapest models.

My HD4870 is just going to have to last for another year or so...I won't spend more than $150 on a GPU. And the 5770 is really a side-step from my 4870.

I'm with you Corky. I am looking for a new card, but not willing to spend the dough for the top of line when I really don't need it.

I'm in the same boat. I run two GTX 260's in SLI and can max everything I throw at them. So where is my motivation to upgrade? For what DirectX 11? To keep up with the Joneses? Maybe if all the top games required DX11 but they don't.

This is good for the old cards.

Since just the initial announcement of the new line the price of 5870"s opn EBAY has plummeted to +/- $250 and looking like $200 will be soon. Saw a 5770 go for $110 the other day

That's good news, might have to look at the 5870 in a few weeks. Want to replace my 8800 gts.
