AMD Radeon HD 6770 and 6750 spec sheets emerge, give NVIDIA cause for concern

Alright AMD, we still haven't forgiven you for burying the glorious name that was ATI, but if your next GPU refresh is as mighty as these numbers indicate, we might at least let you in from the doghouse. A slide detailing two flavors of the upcoming 40nm Barts chip has sprouted up from two independent sources online, and it shows some appreciable gains between generations. The new HD 67x0 cards appear manifestly speedier than their predecessors -- with faster clocks, more texture units, and more ROPs -- but the fun really gets going when you compare them to the HD 5870 and 5850, AMD's previous high-end cards. Memory bandwidth and pixel fillrate are identical between the HD 6750 and 5850, while the HD 6770 even manages to beat the formerly imperious 5870 in a couple of areas. Of course, this is all still unconfirmed information, but considering that Barts is only an "upper midrange" chip that's already stepping on the toes of last year's finest, we feel safe in expecting some pretty big things from the flagship Cayman silicon when it lands -- which will be soon if all these leaks and rumors are anything to go by.

5870 defiantly is better.

This is my next card

Just buy the cheapest GTX480 and an EK GTX480 Copper/Acetal (or whatever your preference is) block and put it on yourself - it will be much cheaper and perhaps even perform better... and the block install is pretty easy - takes like 1/2 hour.

When comparing them the 6770 is a tiny bit better in two categories, but what I'm really hoping for is the price drop in the 5870 when these come out.

Heat is the 480 really better than the 5870? Or is it really all that is needed at the time for the games out now?

Thats what I was getting at Bob. For the price. The 5870 was right there with the 6770 but then put the price factor in and we have a new ball game. I looked at prices for the 5870 and it goes from $370 to $1,100 wow. Hate to see what the 6770 will be.

The 480 is a lot faster than the 5870 in certain situations. Then again, there are few games which really rape the GPU... Just Cause 2, BC2, Crysis (as always), etc.

I would not get a 480 to play Left 4 Dead or counter-strike... it's pointless - no difference whether you get 70fps or 160fps...

I do like to be able to crank everything up (including HBAO) with 4xAA in 1920x1080 in BC2 and to get more than 60fps even in heavy situations (smoke/shaders)...

It's a personal decision... there are MANY reviews which compare the 480 to 5870, so just check them out. Keep in mind they've also improved the performance considerably in some games since release through drivers in the GTX480, especially in BC2, so if the review is old, the GTX480 might perform slightly better.
