Hey guys,

I have heard about Fraps, but was wondering what the best pick, :med3d-surfing:as far as being able to record my gaming live, and also take screen shots. Thanks!

Free I'm never sure on. Pirated is a different story. I personally use Fraps which I bought. I like play claw but me and it have issues.

MSI afterburner comes with a utility that does motion JPEG capture which is the same format play claw uses. I've never had luck watching motion JPEG but the recordings are fine. Once re encoded for YouTube in another format I have a usable video from that.

The only real problem with Fraps is there's only 2 options. Regular and lossless. The default for fraps is an average of 1500 Mbps to put that in perspective a 1080P video from YouTube is encoded at an average if 6 Mbps. Your gonna end up with a bunch of big files and need to encode em to something smaller.

Play claw in addition to it having a fully adjustable MJPEG codec in addition to low and uncompressed has the ability to record multiple sound cards and it has the overlays. Don't be fooled the files still won't be small and you will probably won't to encode to something else for storage and upload.
 
Try MSI Afterburner with the Lagarith codec. It's quite nice for lossless. In my tests it has less CPU impact that Fraps. For lossy, it also has a built-in codec I think which gives pretty decent results.
 
placyclaw 4 hooks on to everything and doesnt murder the fps, but yeah, the next best thing is msi afterburner as it's free

That one version rthey gave away for free gave several people 0 FPS. The game wouldnt even start :p Worked for about 2 days. Performed about the same as 3. Almost thought about buying it to have a working beta instead of a broken freebie.

As far as FPS goes i dont mind at only getting 60 when recording.

those people's computers must have sucked, bad, im doing 70fps on laptop with playclaw on, but yeah, not everyone have the MSI ultrafan and turbo buttons...
 
60- 70 is pretty standard while recording i think, I drop the graphics down abit to get higher, people watching youtube do not care about the shadow's here and their.
 
Thanks for all the replies guys! Ya, i'd rather it be free, but if i have to spend some money that's ok. I just don't want something that's going to tank my computer ya know? lol :D
