I have never had any issues whatsoever with Steam or Origin installing games. Many people complain about download issues. I haven't experienced anything but good from Steam, Origin, or whatever have you. Perhaps it is something else? Like you with downloads, I've had disc's go bad. Better organization is fine and all, but, to me, it's far easier to have a copy of downloads that Steam or Origin keeps for you. The only thing I will say is that you need a fast connection for big downloads obviously.
Honestly, I find more good then bad with downloads. It's just far simpler then having to keep a disc in the system.
