Ok, so it's that time of year again when the boss rewards me handsomely for all the late nights, weekends and the other bullshit that comes with my job.

So Best Buy is having a nice sale on a new PC. Specs as follows:

HP p6774y

Phenom II X4 840T 2.9 GHz
6 GB DDR3 1333
1TB SATA
W7 Home Premium 64 bit.
20" monitor come with it.

Now, my question is..

I'll be swapping out my GTX 260 and my sound card (external) and transferring them to this rig. Also, the socket is AM3 - so there is a possibility that I may be swapping out the 840T for one of the X6 Thurbans (probably 3.0 GHz or better). I have a 650W PSU right now.. will it handle the load with the addition of the 260, the sound card and the upgraded processor? The stock psu is 250W, so I'm thinking it will - just wanted another opinion.

Thanks.

Question Grim. If your transferring those parts, I assume you'll be taking the original parts out right?
If so, would you cheaply sell or donate those spares?

I'm trying to build my own new computer..(=

Well, there won't be any "spares", per se. The other part of the equation is that the new rig will be mine, The rig I have now will go to the wife, and the baby rig I have will go upstairs in my stepdaughter's room so we won't have 3 people battling over 2 PCs.

However, I do have an GT 9800 OC card that I'm not using around here somewhere -just need to find it. Is that something you could use?

Use the bigger PSU with the GTX260; a 250W unit will be... unhappy... with that sort of load. Honestly, though, it depends on the PSU you plan to use. A low-quality "650W" unit may likely be a 350W unit with a flashier sticker.

650 psu should be good for just the one card. I just hope it fits. HP has custom parts some times for there little cases. Tell you boss to just give you a gift card to fry's or tiger or new egg and build your own. For the same price you can build better.

The rig I have now will go to the wife, ...

I have a laptop for the wife to use and she insists on using my rig in the man cave. Always a chore to convince her that her needs are not as important as my gaming.

If you built it yourself you would save hundreds of dollars. If you need help I can help you with no problem at all. Its really ez to set up and build a tower Rim. perhaps you should consider that and also the rig you build will be light years better then a store bought.
