classroom notetaking machine

I would say yes. Expect bloatware though. I have heard good things about the scaled down version of Win 7.

I personally can't stand typing on a keyboard of a less-than-15" laptop (even that feels cramped), but to each his/her own... Other than that, I'm pretty sure a Pentium I 133mhz running MS-DOS 3.0 will be fine for note taking... EDIT FTW!

Pilot, I think there is a third option. I always found my students struggled keeping up in lectures with laptops, and they proved especially limiting when graphs, charts, or anything of the like were involved. Now the plus side is the convenience of storage, but the old Arturo solution is the best. That said, you could always get one of the pens you couple with special paper that let you take paper notes and they are digitized for download in the pen; I have even seen some models that would let you record audio while writing. Check them out; they are easily available and, if they work nice, give you the best of both worlds.

i actually take notes faster on a computer. as for the pen idea, there are tablet netbooks.....

Use a voice recorder during the class and use the notebook later to write down the notes so you don't miss anything.

Dude, I never even read everything they wanted, let alone going through the lectures again... that would take for EVER... and then a 3rd time through your notes? Nah...
