Computer Woes,

Ever since I installed Windows 8.1, my computer has run like shit. I was having a lot of hang time issues with programs and internet. I was not overly impressed with the layout and design of Windows 8.1. It was more of a pain in the ass, than it was worth.

So at the moment I am:

  • Installed a new Heatsink/Fan (I was still running the stock version)
  • Re-Installing Windows 7 Professional 64x
  • Updated the motherboard drivers and video card
  • Updated the BiOS
  • Updating Windows OS (This will take forever)
  • Re-Installing Origin and Battlefield 4 (This will take place when I go to bed)
My computer Specs for the curious:

  • Intel DZ68DB 1155 Motherboard
  • EVGA GeForce GTX 570HD Video Card w/ 2560 MB GDDR5 PCI Express2.0
  • Silent Pro Gold 1200W 80 Plus Gold Certified PSU
  • 16 Gigs of Corsair Vengeance DDR3 PC3 - 12800 1600 Mhz Memory
  • Intel Core I-7 2600 K Quad Core 8MB L3 Cache 3.4 Ghz
  • Onboard Sound
  • WD 1.5T Hard drive (Music, Photos, Documents)
  • WD 500GB Hard Drive (Windows 7 Pro 64x and Origin for BF4)
So after all this bullshit, I am hoping that things will run better and if they don't? I am unsure of what to do next. I know BF4 does not run the best and am hoping this will help run it better. Any suggestion welcome.

I have given that some thought, but I have also heard a lot of woes about them. That maybe my next step. Thanks for the tip.

did you do a clean install or a Windows 8 upgrade?

I did a fresh install of Windows 8.1 and it ran terrible for me. I cannot say for certain it was the OS that was responsible for the problems. Part of going back to Windows 7 Pro was because I disliked the user interface of 8.1 so much. I never do upgrades, I never liked the idea of upgrades.

SSD ftw. and windows 8 has an app of classic shell(makes it like windows 7)

So the traditional "hard drive" is a cause for system sluggishness? I never had issues with them in the past.

Ok that might explain why in-between the maps or connecting to the servers in the TBG BF4 servers it takes for friggin ever? Now I got ya, I think. LOL

Yeah, with BF4, an SSD would make things load quite nicely, plus it would dramatically improve your performance. In terms of woes, most SSDs are very reliable. With windows 7/8.1's usage of TRIM, those SSDs should last a long time. And even then, you'd have to write a ton of data everyday for 25 years before you see signs of major degradation.

Other things you can take a look at doing for your OS if you want it lean and mean:

Should have some items on how to improve performance on the OS side, besides installing classic shell :P

Hey Howling, before spending any more money - can you get more specific with the problems you are having?
What type of hanging/freezing, etc? What kind of applications does it happen with?

Hey Doc,

The hang time happens when I have the internet open with "Blackboard", which I use to do my on-line history class and have multiple browser windows open. Also open at the same time is a program called "Open Office", similar to Microsoft Word. After a little while everything slows down, acts sluggish, and eventually has long hang times.

Also Battlefield 4 runs slow as hell between maps and first connect. Freakin annoying. During game I feel like I am moving slower than everyone else, like I am some how handicapped in the game (Don't know how else to describe it). I don't think it is a video card issue, cause it is a very nice card I spent a lot of money on.

My thoughts were:
CPU does get extremely warm and like I stated I was still running the stock heatsink/fan for my intel processor(lol) So I installed this heatsink/fan http://www.amazon.com/Cooler-Master...8&qid=1396277785&sr=8-1&keywords=heatsink+fan

I cannot imagine this being a memory issue as I run a lot of memory on a 64x OS.

Thanks for the input Doc.

1. What are your CPU temps? Are you overclocked at all?
2. Have you run a memtest? http://www.memtest.org/
3. Have you run any hard drive tests?
4. What Browser are you using?

Do you have a spare older or on board video card you can try to use for just the office/productivity type stuff?
Do things every just crash or "openoffice.org has stopped responding"? etc?

Hey Doc,

I do not over clock (Not interested I guess, don't want to wreck something)

According to "Intel Desktop Utility"

Processor Temp: 32 C
PCH Temp: 47 C
Memory Temp: 28 C
VR Temp: 27 C

Processor Core 0 Temp:33 C
Processor Core 1 Temp:32 C
Processor Core 2 Temp:32 C
Processor Core 3 Temp:32 C

Hard Drive 1 Temp: 32 C
Hard Drive 2 Temp: 25 C

These temperatures are while I am on the internet with TBG. I will run it when I am in game later.
I am using "Google Chrome" at the moment and seems to run good.
I have never tested HD's and do not know how to.
I will now work on the "memtest" and get back to you Doc. Thanks

If they are S.M.A.R.T. capable drives then cpuzfan (i am not sure ) will help in your HDD. Memtest is a DOS app i believe and isn't that hard to run either. If there are other utilities for HDD I don't know what they are.
