40 is standard for E and Xeon. Only 32 are for the inherently crossfire or sli compatible slots.

8 extra lanes are some what separated but not impossible to utilize for multi GPU. I've never looked to see if motherboards made use of it for single full slots.

Do like a quad 780 Ti then throw another on for a useless PhysX card lol.
