Hard to believe it was 25 years ago today that the space shuttle Challenger blew up 73 seconds in to its historic flight. Do you remember where you were or what you were doing on that fateful day?

I had all but forgotten about the Challenger disaster until I read the news this morning but then in an instant was somehow in my mind transported back to that exact minute in time. I can remember sitting there watching this unfold on live TV. I remember what I was doing, where I was but what I remember most was the look on Christa McAuliffe parents faces especially her mother I can still see them clear as day in my mind.

I am not posting this to depress anyone but rather to remember and honor the 7 brave astronauts that gave their lives for our space program and their families who lost their love ones in this tragedy.

Dick Scobee. Michael Smith. Ellison Onizuka. Judith Resnik. Ronald McNair. Christa McAuliffe. Gregory Jarvis.

I'm reminded of an old and tasteless joke.

Q: What color were Christa McAuliffe's eyes?
A: Blew
One blew this way one blew that way.

I had started working at the West Loch Naval Magazine a couple of weeks before, after being at Pearl Harbor. We saw it on CNN (the only game in town then). I usually rode to work from Pearl to West Loch on a motor launch because 10 minutes on a boat was better than 45 or more around the harbor in a car. That day I had driven to work instead and on the way home all the cars on H-1 had their lights on. I didn't know that was something the locals did, like for a funeral. Since Onizuka was from Hawaii they all had their lights on for him. Very surreal.

I was sitting in a meeting in Mt Hope, KS.

EDIT *** Oh, and I almost forgot, you're all gay!

Was a snow day at school my freshman year, was watching it live on TV. Shitty time.

Wow, I was in Mrs Ames' current events class - 6th grade. One of the other teachers came in and pulled her aside and told her what happened... and we spent the rest of the day watching it blow up - over and over again. It was sad and cool as hell at the same time.

Then the jokes started the very next day...... NASA = Need Another Seven Astronauts

what an awesome way to die. i mean lets be realistic, rotting away in a hospital, or a giant explosion seen by nearly everyone in the world. i'll take the explosion 9 times out of 10

Agreed! I would much rather go out in a blaze of glory than to die slowly in a hospital.

I forgot to mention this the other day but February 1, was the 8th anniversary of the 2003 Space Shuttle Columbia disaster.

For those who take chances and risk it all by putting themselves in harm's way for the betterment and advancement of mankind we will not forget your sacrifice.
