I just had to post these vids. It's slowly coming together!

Well, it's going to be at least 2 years until it's "released" most likely (unless some studio buys the project and speeds up the development), but nevertheless... it's a real, working tech demo.

A short intro to the project: A _TRUE_ sequel to elite in the making. It's promising to be what every other space game since elite wasn't. Featuring a seamless engine with planetary landings and a truly procedurally-generated universe with realistic orbits and newtonian physics. Developed by one guy (I think) and the community as a pet project. Not funded AFAIK, and not a game studio.

Engine looks to be coming together well. I just hope they do just as well with the gameplay :-) .

(btw in the video when he's moving really fast I think he's using time compression - that's why the ship appears to be moving unrealistically fast towards the planet etc.)

Man, this brings back memories.

Yeah I agree that they need to work on there realism factor, looks great tho

I think it's time compression - most of the space sims feature time compression to eliminate the fact that it takes hours, days, weeks, years to get from place to place. Elite had really high time compression to travel within a system - otherwise you'd literally have to wait DAYS to get from one place to another sometimes in front of the PC.

Most space sims stick you in a tight space where everything is really close together. Elite and this game features seamless gameplay to stations far, far away from each other. The way it worked in Elite (and I hope Infinity too) is you bought an autopilot and could just select a destination and press the time compression key. If you encountered a ship mid-trip, or another "point of interest" the time compression would slow down by itself to normal time and allow you to take appropriate action.
