Alright, I have to say it - this game is damn impressive. I liked the first one a lot, and this is a lot like it, but better.
Maxed out, it's ridiculously stunning. I have no idea what they did to that engine, but it's running at acceptable framerates (with a GTX 480 anyway ;-) 45+ most of the time, and it's not even overclocked yet hehe), with a visibility of kilometers in all directions.
Of course I'm assuming it does reduce level of detail and "pops" objects, but it does that really, really well and it's almost unnoticeable unlike other engines.
The game itself is based on completely all-out fun, without concern for realism. It's basically aiming to be a remake of a Schwarzenegger movie from the mid 90's I think - lots of explosions, oomph, visual and aural stimulation, and a b-movie story and acting which only serve as an excuse for more explosions, car chases, skydiving, etc. Realism isn't even a word that the developers even thought about it seems - you have a "swing" on your arm that can pull/attach you towards anything anytime, or pull people towards you, attach people to vehicles, attach objects to vehicles, people to flying exploding tanks (lulz!), people to the ceiling, people to other people (lulz), etc. Additionally, you have unlimited parachutes. All of this shit together makes for amazing possibilities of gameplay and ownage.
The "swing arm" itself is kind of an all-powerful "I want to be there / I want to be in that vehicle" kind of tool, as you can easily hijack any vehicle you can reach with the swing (hello army helicopter with mounted guns) and use it to PWN everything around you.
It doesn't do anything particularly amazingly well, like every other open-world game of its kind (GTA?), but it's amazingly fun to play and the visuals are pure jizz. It's been a while since I've played a game and been like "omgz this looks awesome" and have just flown around just to enjoy the scenery. BTW Crysis was pretty good, but for me this is even more impressive because of the sheer scale of it and the detail they've accomplished.
The whole game feels really solid, and is a lot of fun to play imo. Try the demo on steam ;-) .
Oh btw it's DX10+ only, so Vista and a DX10 card minimum.
Here's a funny video (not mine). I'll post some HQ screenshots of me flying around later tonight or tomorrow or something to show off the amazingness. Plenty of gameplay videos on youtube if you care...
