My wife is starting school soon to be an IT pro. She is going to need a laptop for school. Go guys/gals know of a good computer, mac or windows pc, that is around $1000 that would be a good laptop for her?

You can get laptop's off of Newegg from anywhere between 300-800 bucks, depending on what your budget is, and what you want, performance wise.

I personally want a mac so I have the credentials/experience for running all three major OSes (Windows/OSX/Linux). They had a macbook pro, the thirteen inch with a 250 gig hard drive, an Nvidia mobility graphics card (model 9400M) and 2 gigs of memory for 1099 with my student discount.

Oh snap Squirrel's wife is here! I personally can't stand Apple because of their warranty support now. If either of you smoke you pretty much void the warranty. They call the laptop "a toxic health hazard".

Neither of us smoke. ^_^ If the mac clone company would release a laptop, I'd buy it. I just personally, like I said, want it for the Mac OS credential that comes with it. I already have the experience with Linux and every flavor of Windows from 3.1 on.

Psytar is currently being run out of business by Apple. Is there any particular spec's that your looking for?

Something with a big enough hard drive to have both OSX and Win 7, with a dual layer DVD burner on it (The ability to read Blu ray would be nice, but is not necessary) and a decent enough graphics card to play the sims 3 on it. Oh, and more than one usb port=utter necessity.

Micro Center has this one for $899

15.6" screen, 500gb HD, Intel Duo Core P8700 2.53ghz and 4gb RAM and ATI Mobility Radeon HD 4330 video card, comes with Win7 OS 64bit

The HD is big enough to do multiple partitions for your operating systems.

Also, don't forget to check at your school, if it's a local university, for student deals on laptops. You can also check with Apple and any vendor direct for student discounts.

Yeah, the macbook pro I saw on there had a 100 dollar discount, and the normal macbook had a 50 dollar discount on the apple store.

I might have one for sale, a Vostro 1500... if you're interested. It's 2 years old, and I've only used it for school.

Very, very well taken care of and no problems at all... but I'd like to think about whether I want to part with it :-/
