Right.. Here we go!

I need a mac for music (editing and just compatibility with everyone else). No mac isn't an option basically. Apart from the obvious hardware barrier and machine specs. If I ran bootcamp with win7 on as dual boot would it be possible to play games on the mac?

Here are the specs I'm looking at anyway:

2.4GHz quad-core Intel Core i7
8GB 1333MHz DDR3 SDRAM
Intel HD Graphics 3000 and AMD Radeon HD 6770M with automatic graphics switching 1GB DDR5 - (what is that all about?? Power saving or something?)

As you can see the 6770 isn't too bad, not the best but it would run pretty much all games at medium minimum. But by the time I have the money I'll probably be looking at Sandy bridge, although I doubt apple will update immediately? Not sure, what do you all think?

Cheers

The Intel graphics could play Portal and the 6770M can play Portal 2 :p

Remember that Radeon is a mobile variant nothing like the desktop. 480 stream processors/shaders with a 128 bit memory bus.

Looks like it might compare to the Radeon 6570 desktop card.

is that the same with Nvidia?
So I might not get the same performance out of the m version right?

Nvidia the 580M is basically an underclocked GTX 460/560 the 560M is an underclocked 550 Ti the 540M is..... I dont even know.

Yeah they're all based on the same architecture. But theyre under more severe power constraints usually 50 to 100 watts. My card was 75 watts before i overvolted it. I cant even run on battery anymore the damn thing turns off under load. Heat is a problem to so they'll give it a similar shader count and memory bus to desktop card (usually the mobile number is higher than the desktop) and run lower clocks.

You wont be seeing any kind of 6770 desktop performance out of a 6770M. AT a quick glance the Shader count, clock speeds and memory bus/type match up with the 6570 desktop card.

man you're so knowledgeable!! Haha
Yeah that's helped a lot man :) maybe it's worth just getting an ipad or something for the convenience and getting an imac?
although I just checked out the imac specs and they use the same GPUs. you just cant win with apple! the bastards hahah.

Just checked out some vids though, guys can run bf3 on lower specs than what im looking at on medium really well so with higher specs and better laptop support from EA I think it should be playable :) haha. But tbh with a mac it takes out all the overclocking options too, just cause with a mac you dont really know what you are messing around with compared to a pc.

Cheers for the help Rain

Im not so sure what your looking todo is available on the ipad :p. Plus I can imagine if your live recording anything to the machine DTC latency on an ipad would be the suck. The iMac is typically based on laptop components, nothing wrong with this but they usually dont offer much more than the MacBook in it.

You will have to consult the community surrounding your work but why not look at the Mac Mini if its mainly for music. It shouldnt be bad at all even the base model will only have a real deficient of graphics. The Intel HD 3000 isnt anything special but its not bad for HD Video and keeping it real small like Portal. But thats not what we came for. I probably would not bother with the max upgrade to the i7 since its the Dual core version (baseline mobile i7's are dual) Its really a decision of do you want the slightly better gpu i dont think the 200mhz difference in the cpu is gonna be killer. Has firewire 800 and thunderbolt one of which should be fast enough for some form of input equipment. Base model definitely needs a ram upgrade, not sure if you can open these newer models or not. A 5400 rpm hard drive....eh but they used to stick macbooks with that as well so whatever. I would grab a larger 5400 rpm hard drive (more data density per rpm = faster) or grab the 7200 rpm upgrade.

Before this Supra probably didn't think I had any love for the Apple.

Yes? You see it's like Beetlejuice, say it three times and I will appear.

Hahaha :)

Thanks for all your help Rain :). Got some stuff to think about and the mac mini isn't a bad idea actually :)
