So I've started building my NAS and need some input on a RAID Controller, I want to have secure place to keep my pictures and movies. Along with that I want to put all my DVDs and Blu-Ray disks on this to stream. I'm getting 4x4TB WD Red drives, what RAID should I use?

as you're getting only 4 drives and you want the data to be secure, raid 5 would be good to go, gives room for one to fail without dire consequences.

Though raid 6 could help you with recovery times... but then again you only have 4 drives.

I presume you are building this yourself? what os? I use software raid for my nas/home media server. it's easy , reliable, and will work if you have to move all the discs. I'm not a fan if raid controllers as they become the weakest link in your storage/backup. If the controller fails you have to replace it. sometimes the drives will only work if you get that identical controller. things to keep in mind.

how much storage are you planning on needing?
