This is mainly for Rain, since he always hooks it up, but if anyone else has experienced anything like this chime in. I haven't gamed for at least 5 years for the most part. I use my computer less than my phone. I felt like I used to know a lot about Windows through 7. So my gf boutght an HP Pavilion for school...w/e. I use it to check email, sell bike parts on CL and the kids use it for school. This POS sucks...I know that. Here is what I don't get with 8.1 or 8:
So I check my email, look up a YouTube video and then sit down on the couch. All of a sudden it is friggen grinding away(the HD). Every time I use it. The HD light that says the disk is being accessed is blinking like crazy. So I get up, open task manager.....NOTHING! As long as task manager is open it doesn't do shit. I could sit down for hours and nothing. Get up, close task manager and sit back on the couch...F-ing light is going off again. WTF.
As I am typing this it isn't doing anything. As soon as I sit back on the couch the rig is working at something again. I can never figure out what. Open task manager and it is done. What the F is up with Windows that is is 24 7 DL crap or whatever it is doing?
It drives me nuts. Is it a virus? Is it one of the 7000 windows apps I never use updating? I hate windows 8. It's the only thing I've used worse that a then a cell phone that hasn't been cracked. I have anti-virus and malware programs. Nobody really uses this computer. Less than once a day for maybe 10 minutes at a time. It never says windows is updating unless it is when I shut it down.
Hel me before I smash this fucker.

Since it seems to start when you leave the computer be, it probably starts up some "On Idle" task then when you come back it stops. its taunting you, making you feel like your crazy, its out to get you

That's what I feel like. It works harder when I'm away from it than it ever does when I'm using it.

when I put my laptop on hibernate, before it goes into that mode, the 3 fans (two from my 2 GPUs and 1 for the CPU) turn on and work harder than when I'm playing GTA V! or any other games. I wouldn't worry about it.

If I leave it idle long enough for the screen to go turn off at 15 minutes, like I have it set, the same thing happens with the fans...it's not like it's liable to get hotter when idling than when I'm stressing it with games so I just accept it and move the mouse or shut down/hibernate to shut the fans up

Just from my experience, Windows does shit at start up or on shut down. I haven't used anything on Windows 8 enough to know. As soon as this POS is idle IMO it is grinding the HD harder then ever. It just seems weird. The friggen little LED is like a strobe light at a Floyd concert.

If you click on the up arrow next to the time can you give me all the names of the icons down there? Also if you open task manager what is using all the Disk resources? If you click Disk at the top it will sort the items to see what is using the most. Let me know this info and I can help you out.

I hope you have Anti-Virus software running.
You can download for free MalwareBytes and SpyBot programs and then run them.
Also Microsoft has software for free to check for viruses and malware.
Slight possibility that the Windows' Disk Indexing or Disk Defragment program is running.

So here is the honest truth. I will take some video. Also a note...I don't feel like a complete novice with a computer. I just really haven't gamed since windows 7 so IDK all the tricks of windows 8.

No matter what-
I turn on comp.
I use it to check TBG (of course), email, craigslist, or look at the news.
I get up and sit on couch.
The sound it makes when the HD is being accessed starts a few minutes after I sit. Look over, HD light is going.
I get up, screen is usually timed out by this time, click the mouse or hit the space bar.
Hit Ctrl + Alt + Delete open task manager
SOUND STOPS, LIGHT STOPS
Click on HD...nothing except maybe 7-10% system interrupts but it stops basically when I open it.
Sit back down...screen times out and it starts going again.
Get up to look and it goes away as soon as I touch the space bar or mouse button.

I have a AVG and IObit malware installed. The HP crap is all expired and it is all disabled if not uninstalled.

I think the computer is just F-ing with me

Check the Task Scheduler and see if anything is listed. If the computer is under warranty you might have to send it in to get fixed, or speak to someone in technical support.
