Here's my current build: I've changed my mind about building my GF a PC. Just looking to upgrade my own atm. AFAIK, there is no PC swap meet thing to go to anywhere nearby. I'd prefer to buy new since I can guarantee I'll have a warranty. I've changed my post here b/c the folks at Tom's never came back to check on the post. What do yall think is the best option presented here? I think whatever it is, I'd have to save up additional for a new PSU.
Looking at a budget around 450-500 atm. Perhaps a bit more if I need a new PSU (likely I will)

here's what Tom's Hardware suggests, but they DID NOT mention PSU requirements. I provided the link because the page itself is quite large.

I found this list which (from what I can tell, is a decent upgrade from my PC for not much more).
The GPU is actually 20$ less on amazon currently.

First thing first, what's your budget?

Also a list of things to do/not do.
  1. Do not skimp on the gpu. There's no sense getting high performance in every other part of your rig except the one that matters for gaming. Yes, it costs more but you can also sell it for more which makes future purchases of high end video cards painless.
  2. Get a SSD. Games load faster, everything loads faster including Win with a SSD.
  3. Don't skimp on the PSU. It's the heart of your rig, powers everything and you don't want a cheap piece of shit that will fail and could take your other components with it.
  4. Get a good headset. You play FPS games, you need to hear in game sounds. I'm a huge fan of Sennheiser because they are clear, loud, comfortable, and last a long time.

Will take a better look when I have more time although it's hard as parts here are priced differently but whatever you decide make sure you get a SSD for the OS or even better one big enough for OS and Battlefield or whichever game you play the most.

*Edit Just to add do you have anywhere decent there you can buy used? If your on a budget I would get a used GPU so you can get something a little more powerful. If you could find a used Evga card sometimes they will still have warranty that can be transferred from the seller.

Budget is huge! Set your limit.

I agree with Sixer on all parts but the GPU as the new Nvidia line will be dropping next quarter.

Edit: Yes, this will put you on the bleeding edge, but that's the game in computer components.

Hi Sheep, do you have a PC swap meet place near you? In Kalamazoo at the county fairgrounds at least once a month people get together to sell PC equipment from processors and memory to full towers. Pieces or whole computers. Good Luck Bro

Sorry folks, I didn't come across fully the first time. The budget is around the same spent (600-700 for the PC itself, excluding Windows and a new heatsink).
The PC isn't for me, it's for my girlfriend. Since it's a christmas present, it'd be pretty shitty to say "Hey, Here's the idea of your present, but you have to wait a couple months".
So I'm not looking to alter my own PC at all. Just buy for my gf.

What part of FLorida are you in? I can sell you a better PC than that for your budget. I live in the Daytona Beach area. One thing I've done in the past is find a HP/DELL prebuilt on Craigslist. I've bought a couple with the I7-3770/4770 for around $350 and then just upgrade the PSU/GPU and it will beat the build you're posting all day for the same money roughly. Then as you gt money upgrade to an SSD/new case etc.

first off congrats on landing a gamer girl. the other question i would ask is what games is she wanting to play? as i agree not to cheap out on the GPU/PSU but no sense in getting high end GPU and spending the extra cash if her go to game is WoW or LoL something that a older model or lower end card can handle than top of the line. i know myself i usually base my builds off what i plan to play or am currently playing to get the most of the game for the least amount. just something to consider

@Blitz hmmm that is a good point. I think she's only playing WoW because that's the upper limit of what her laptop can run. She tried to play ARK in the past, but it wouldn't even run well on my PC, much less her laptop. It's hard to know what she would LIKE to play since she can't run much at all.
I know she's not into major FPS titles.. so she'd never play Battlefield, or ARMA for instance.

@Chocolate I live in Live Oak, FL. Daytona is over 150 miles from me I believe. I'll definitely check out craigslist though. It's always a concern buying from someone else though b/c you never know if there's some problem they experienced and the GPU or CPU is on its last leg.

Well my original offer stands, Id be happy to pm you my phone number. You're like 2-2 1/2 hours from me. On the Craigslist part, If you find something just send me a PM or give me a call/txt and ill be happy to help you out. It's not hard to tell if something is off when dealing with people. I wouldn't worry about it.

Just an example, This one is $600 on CL, It's not bad, but you could do better finding a "prebuilt" Dell/HP and going from there. Anyways, I'm available if you have any questions.

honestly if shes not big on FPS games ur probably ok still running a 3.6-8 quad core CPU. call me the asshole but we all know I am so ill just say it. take the CPU and GPU PSU outta urs use it to build hers put the 6core and r9 and PSU in ur rig. everyone has a good xmas. I already stated I was an asshole but why not if you can play ur games higher than low settings and she can play hers maxed? my ex wanted a pc real bad so I asked her what she wanted to play it was lower end stuff so I told her id build it from my parts as it would trump her laptop and improve what I like to play. of course she wanted the new stuff but hello kitty doesn't need a $300 GPU but I do. she was happy with it as it exceeded her needs and met mine. again ill say it im a cheap asshole. no need for the vagina joeleb to pop in here and call me out. yall thought I was gonna say squirlley huh

I've changed the entire purpose of this post. new information provided, new questions need answering :D
Thanks!

Joking of course, but WoW can probably be played on a Surface Pro :D.
