The K20 Tesla's this is based on is also available in a 2688 core count. They pretty much had this in the pipeline around the launch of the GTX 680 part of the reason people were whining about the 680 not being the product it could have been. The 680 is basically the graphics card variant of the 1,536 core K10.

But yeah can't wait for the 7 series cards something in the middle i hope trickles down from the top.
