I am going to update my PC this week or next, I wanted to throw it out there to see what others think.
Current specs
Core i7-920 standard clock air cooled
P6t asus motherboard <------ spell check wants me change asus to anus lol
Corsair ram its bot bargain but its close I don't know the specs
EVGA GTX 260 graphics card
Sound-blaster Sound card I think its a fatality but I'm not sure
1000 watt cooler master power supply
all my peripherals are breaking or broken
razer mouse is down to 3 out of 5 working buttons
keyboard is a Logitech basic keyboard locks up if I hit too many buttons at the same time
my headset is a 15 dollar plantronics
and a 19in acer monitor

A new mouse and video card are a must.
1000 is my limit here is a look at what I am thinking about so far

I am not totally sold on the headset or the monitor just yet and not sure about the video card or the keyboard and mouse just wondering what others think.

Don't cheat yourself on the video card. Get something good to game with, not just get by with. I'd drop the memory down to 8gb on the X58 system and save a shit load of cash. The more memory you use with your current CPU and motherboard, the more it stresses your CPU, making your system unstable if it's pushed.

How much memory are you currently using? 8gb is plenty unless you're doing a lot of video editing it's more than enough to game with. Also, it seems like a waste to get that much of 1600mhz. I know it's about as fast as the X58 platform goes while being stable, but you get much better returns with a new chipset and faster memory. Not that I"m saying get a new MB and CPU, but why waste the money on something you won't get much out of? You could then use the extra money on a better video card and be much happier with it.
8gb Gskill memory-works well with any damn motherboard out there and memory timings 8-8-8-24@ 1.5V $85.00

EVGA GTX 780 $509

It ends up being $40 more than what you listed and will provide a much better gaming experience.

Can I run that memory right on a board built with 6 slots? I don't really know. to invest in another mobo and cpu is at least a 1000 by itself. I won't go cheap in that area.

Yes, it will just run dual channel mode versus tri-channel. Speed wise there's no difference between dual and tri-channel.

Why are you upgrading an I7-920? It has way more than enough CPU for today's games at 3.2GHz, which should be easy even on air without changing voltage.

If you're adventurous, you can try 3.5 with a small bump.

I dunno I have always been a fan of moving people off the 920. Clock speed is nothing to actual work done. A haswell i5 at the same clock speed and having no HT should stomp it.

At the same time if your on a budget I'm still with you and six. Take care of that video card first.

The 920 is getting old, but I feel like CPUs are underutilized massively, probably because 90% of interesting games are either simplistic indies that could probably run on a smartphone, or coded for for consoles with weak CPUs or laptop CPUs first.

I definitely don't feel any urge to upgrade whatsoever, and I'll probably skip 1 or 2 more "generations" unless there's some massive transformation in the gaming industry which I don't see happening anytime soon.

On the other hand, if 4K takes off, you can bet your ass people will be buying video cards like hotcakes for the next 2 years.

The 920 is getting old but it still more than capable for what I need. I really don't want to do a complete tear down of my rig so I am going to keep it till probably next year at least. The thing I worry about with the memory is creating a bottleneck I currently have 12 gigs and I don't really know what RAM effects.

RAM isn't a bottleneck for your rig, the speed of the cpu is unless you're overclocking it and despite what Heat says I upgraded from a 920 @4.2ghz to a stock speed Haswell 4770k and the difference is night and day for any application. And, while there might not be a huge speed difference in games from the 920 overclocked to the 4770k, there is a tremendous difference in the quality of gameplay; meaning I don't have the microstutters when there's a lot of explosions or action that were so frequent with the 920.

But, definitely leave that for now. The 920 still gets the job done, and with a bit of an overclock will still do you well in games. The biggest problem is that Motherboards and components from the X58 systems are at end life or near end life now and it's just a matter of time before they give out.

+1--the 920 can get it done, but the platform as a whole is getting a little long in the tooth (you're missing out on USB 3.0, Thunderbolt, faster PCI-E, better timing/bios options, and a few other things). 24GB of ram is overkill in my opinion unless you're a heavy mulitasker in video eiditing/photoshop and a few memory-centric programs. If your main concern is gaming, spend the loot on the video card and overclock the 920...upgrade your CPU cooling with the loot saved :)

USB 3.0... what's the point of it?

Thunderbolt... wtf is it and why should I even care?

Faster PCI-E: yes, when SSDs start hitting 2000MB/s, and I have one, or if I'm doing RAID 0|5|6 with 6 or more of them, I might consider that limitation an annoyance. (I know because I was looking at raid cards and what the limits of the PCIe 2.0 bus are) Until then... what's the point?

I feel like the new things that they're coming up with is a bit of a premature ejaculation. It feels a lot like that Seiki 4K that has been sold for 6 months now without an actual cable/port standard for 60Hz or more... pointless.

I'm not saying they're not nice or they won't take off. I'm just saying I won't pay $600 for them every year without a benefit readily apparent to me.

Thanks I might just leave the RAM as it is now. I bought this platform because it was supposed to stay relevant longer, I should've known better than to believe that knowing it was first generation stuff. That's one of the reasons I selected that RAM in the first place there just isn't anything out there to get. So I am going to ditch getting RAM till I update my Mobo and CPU I also threw in a new mouse pad. I am also going to go with the card that Sixer posted grand total of about 860.00.

I don't know how motherboards handle 4 sticks these days, but I remember issues from the early days (years ago, admittedly), especially with overclocking. Generally I personally stick to 2 slots occupied (or 3 in your/my case lol).

RAM speed doesn't matter much in most cases, especially games. As long as you have 6GB right now, you should be good for another couple of years IMO.

Yes, it's the party pony, her name is Pinkie Pie, and she's my favorite one. What are you, a MLP noob ;-P ?

Bronies.... It looks like it would be XXX if you could see the bottom half.

That second link had Firefox telling me to split, so I did. Never seen that exact page before actually.
