S/PDIF vs HDMI for XBOX

Just picked up a new XBOX 360 slim with the built in S/PDIF. I've never bothered with optical audio, but now I figured I'd mess around with it. Is one better than the other or are they the same basically? I'll be runnin it through a receiver to 7.1 speakers.

If you can use HDMI, use that, if you cant use optical, thats what I have always done.
