If Samsung adding the word Plus to a phone wasn't their way of naming phones that actually completely suck compared to the original model Id tell them to call this the Galaxy S4 Plus.

I dunno what do my fellow phone nuts think? Its dust and water resistant which is nice and GS4 Active owners have enjoyed. What kills me is something like my Nexus 5 doesn't have a removable door but also isn't resistant but the GS5 does have a removable door...

Equipped with a gimped 5.1 inch AMOLED panel I don't expect any GS4 owners to be too bothered by it. The storage is so last year and the ram while sufficient just points out 2 things. This phone doesn't pack either of Samsungs newer higher capacity eMMC or ram chips... why not? Actually seems like the pattern of the Note line getting the better specs to bridge the tablet gap might continue.

I was kinda hoping to see USB 3.0 on more phones. Sure its not that useful but my Nexus 5 clocks write speeds of 200 MB/s its not useless either. The battery capacity looks sufficient assuming the software keeps things under control. For GS3 owners the CPU will probably be a hell of an upgrade but I don't think anyone on a Krait 600 will really care if they know whats what.

  • 5.1-inch 1080p Super AMOLED display
  • 2.5GHz quad-core ARM chip (Snapdragon 800 or maybe 801)
  • 2GB of RAM
  • 16/32GB internal storage plus microSD
  • 802.11ac MIMO
  • LTE Cat. 4
  • USB 3.0
  • 2800mAh battery
  • 16MP rear camera, 2.1MP front camera
  • Fingerprint scanner
  • Heart rate sensor
  • IP67 Dust and water Resistant
  • 142.0 x 72.5 x 8.1mm, 145g
  • Android 4.4.2

Not sure what the intention is with the back. Perhaps easier to hold or something?

I'm waiting for it to come out so I can buy an S4 outright for cheap. Screw contracts.

Part of why I ended up with the Nexus. I'm already on my second carrier with it. Sad face that it doesn't support Verizon and vice versa but its fun having a phone that works on every US GSM carrier plus Sprint.

Now if we could just talk Google into expandable storage.

As far as the GS4 goes did you look at the MotoX at all? Same CPU but the MotoX will actually run apps faster due to optimizations software side. I run the MotoX Dalvik libraries on my nexus crazy benchmarks. But I mean its only 399 for the GSm version not sure what carrier your on. The Verizon version I think is still full price.

i would consider getting it. Although, I need to research carriers here again and see if i can get a better deal now. My employee discount ends with sprint, in May.

I have mixed feelings on it.
My GS4 display is fantastic, so I can't imagine it really being better.
The Water/Dust resistance is a great and unexpected addition. I hope they set the standard for this with all phones.
The Processor speed type stuff I don't really care about, again my phone does fantastic with speed.

The battery size/life increase is a good improvement - though I would have loved to have seen the hardware define the improved battery life more rather than the the increase in battery size.

Fingerprint sensor - don't care. I'm fine that they have it, as long as it doesn't increase the price.
Kinda meh on the backplate, but we'll see how it is in store.

Heart rate monitor - a neat but gimmicky feature. Being able to see/record my daily heart rate at rest and my heart rate right after working out on a daily basis would be nice - but it is in no way a game changer. Especially since smartwatches and The Dash are going to change that game over the next year or two.

Not planning on replacing my GS4 until the next Nexus Phone comes out - assuming it is any good (which, it probably will be).
If friend was asking me for phone advice, I'd steer them towards the GS4 soon or the Nexus5 (depending on their level of tech savvyness and/or how willing I am to help them get going).

Overall, I don't think the GS5 is a bad device or choice for samsung. Its not a game changer, but I didn't expect it to be. Just like i don't think the iPhone 5S was a game changer compared to the 5. I think the GS5 will be a great choice/device for many people - as long as Samsung doesn't screw up the OS/Touchwizzer too much. If they can have a successful launch without (many) bugs, battery life, or security issues I think it will do well.

Heart rate sensor? Pfft, so it doesn't do bypass surgery like the rumors mentioned?

I just bought a Note 3 outright so I'm not in the market anymore but that phone looks pretty good. 1080p on a 5.1 inch screen is pretty good resolution, won't make a ton of difference on video but pics will look nice. I really like the 16mp camera, my Note only has a 13 and it's a big part of the reason I bought it. Not sure what they are going for with that back either, my phone has a leather backplate which is just bizarre to me. It's actually the whole thing that is leather, not leather wrapped on plastic. I'm jealous of that 16mp camera though.
