Wow...

So until today I thought the Swine Flu was kind of this distant thing that only happened to very few people etc...

And then this morning a professor announced that some student that was sitting in front of ME just got the fucking swine flu!!!!

I'm kind of officially freaked out. It seems it's like a steadily and quickly growing pandemic that is kind of ignored in the media (perhaps to avoid panic?!)... I've been hearing about other cases nearby.

I'm thinking of wearing a high-filtration mask to school next week (and wherever else I go)... I'll be the first one on campus if I do actually... so it will definitely be really weird.

So um... isn't anyone else freaked out? I realize there's a small possibility that you might actually die from it, but I'd like to minimize even the small chance that there is.

Also, has anyone travelled lately? I'm going back home for 2 weeks at the end of June, so I was wondering if I should wear a mask on the airports and if other people are etc...

If you go through life being scared of all this stuff - you might as well never get out of bed! My g/f aunt had swine flu and didn't know it until she had already gotten over it. She went to the doctor and had all the normal flu symptoms and they asked her to voluntarily quarantine herself just in case. She got better and then got the test results saying she had swine flu. Key word is "had"

I would say to go about your normal business and keep in mind that you may have been exposed. If you start feeling the slightest bit off - dont hesitate to go to a doctor!!!

OH and the media has made a big deal out of it! Especially here in New York were it hit first.

Well, most stuff you kind of have some information on... diseases and things.

For swine flu, what scares me is that nobody knows the likelihood that you might actually die... so if you get sick it's like playing Russian roulette without knowing how many bullets are loaded maybe 0 maybe 6?

I understand the chance to die is low, but it's still much more substantial than what you would've gotten walking down the street before this thing appeared...

Check out the CDC site they're loaded on disease info http://www.cdc.gov/h1n1flu/

Basically, though they don't have enough data yet to give concrete numbers on who gets hit the worst or why since this a novel flu type. But some things do not change even with a novel disease. Those who are likely to get the most severe cases are kids, elderly, and people with chronic diseases or autoimmune deficiencies. So far, the mortality rate and hospitalization rate are pretty steady with about 8% of those who get swine flu needing hospitalization and/or dying. But remember those statistics are skewed by the those most susceptible to diseases to begin with-kids, elderly, chronic diseases.

Anybody remeber SARS...same shit; I think they want everybody freaked out

Hell yeah, that's how media makes money. More people tune in, more ad slots get filled. It's like "reality" news, but worse. There's a reason I don't watch TV to begin with, it's so full of shit and disinformation, scare tactics, and idiots.

I was doing some work at a plant and this operator was wearing a little white mask. WTF is that going to block; to myself if it's that bad your going to need a full blown fucking resperator. Come on, did anybody see Outbreak.

It does stop stuff... although it's obviously not perfect.

Is the mortality and hospitalization rate really 8% or is it 0.8%? I saw that as well. Hm.

Soldier he said a little white mask; wearing the SOB would freak the fuck out of some people...LOL I'm thinking your right, to it right the first time. Before you know it, the governement is going to give each of us a protective bubble so we can't hurt ourselves

Fuck it, life is full of risks. The next person you see on campus who's coughing, just go up grab their face and inhale it all. You might as well go for the gusto. Just hope they didn't eat anchovies or chocolate. Trust me, inhaling used air with those odors is no fun.

LOLZ soldier yah... that'd be a little different in airports and university lectures etc lmao.

On the news up here they said that the actual mortality rate is probably around 1% possibly up to 2% the reason it is high right now is most cases happened in places with poor healthcare and most people who actually get it do not report it because it presents itself as just another flu. You probably shouldn't worry about it, you have a healthy immune system and i assume you have had the flu before so you should be fine. Heck, when in doubt, kill the infected cells with hard alcohol :-)

So that rate is 0.8% after all, not 8%...

Well that's not too bad... I guess I'll have to see if I live if I get it.

BTW I've had the flu before (a long time ago ~2 years or more I think) but I don't think it works like that... you can't build up immunity and this is why this is so annoying - a new strain comes out every so often and you get to get sick again... and I haven't had this one.

Buy one of these suits if your really afraid.
