(CNN) -- If the internet is feeling a little more crowded these days, there's good reason.
According to a report out Tuesday, there will be 2 billion Web dwellers by the end of this year.
The number of internet users worldwide has doubled in the past five years according to the report, from the International Telecommunication Union.
Much of the big number can be attributed to internet growth in developing countries. The report said 162 million of the 226 million new Internet users in 2010 will live in those countries, where Web access is still growing.
But the gap between access in high-tech countries and those still developing remains big.
About 65 percent of Europeans are on the internet, the report said, compared to less than 10 percent of Africans.
The report also focuses on the growing availability of, and demand for, faster broadband service, which allows users to easily download or share larger files, such as photos and videos.
The ITU, an agency of the United Nations that monitors communication technology issues, said these high-speed internet connections, which are increasingly needed to view modern Web content efficiently, are the key to continued growth.
"Broadband is the next tipping point, the next truly transformational technology," Secretary-General Hamadoun Toure said in a written statement. "It can generate jobs, drive growth and productivity, and underpin long-term economic competitiveness."
Only about 8 percent of the world will have broadband access this year, according to the report.

Not too mention the fact that I read an article yesterday that stated we had less than 5% of IPv4 addresses available. With the advent of all these cellular technologies everything has a "broadband" connection that requires an IP address. For whatever reason there hasn't been early adoption to IPv6 even though working for the government they pushed for us to have the hardware and capabilities in place for when they do decide to make the transition. I'm actually surprised it's not more than 2 billion.

There waiting for a good time to spring it on everyone sort of like the delay with Digital TV. I would imagine its a money issue mixed with politics, as usual.

...And users is/will be nothing compared to devices

Cisco: 1 Trillion Connected Devices by 2013

There will be 1 trillion devices connected to the Internet by 2013, said Cisco Chief Technology Officer Padma Warrior during her Wednesday keynote address at CTIA.

Warrior argued the boom in connected devices, applications and mobile broadband would not only change the wireless industry but society in general.

"The Internet is no longer just an information superhighway, it's a platform," Warrior said, citing the increased adoption of M2M technologies and the exponential growth of apps, which will hit 1.5 million by 2013.

To prove her point, Warrior moved through a series of technology demonstrations with a Cisco colleague that detailed what it would be like to interact with next-generation mobile technology.

The pair showed off augmented reality in a subway system; location-based advertising and mobile coupons; and a mobile telepresence app. "The next big revolution that will happen is the Internet of things," Warrior said.

Cisco is aggressively pushing its next-generation M2M technologies, including a smart cities initiative with the state of Colorado which was announced Wednesday.

  • Now if only the users actually understood how to use the internet or what a browser is we'd all die of shock. I find it amazing that the majority who use a computer have little understanding of, and are not interested in learning, the details of how their computer or the internet works.

The most Frequent questions I get:

  • How do I get on the internet? (as they sit there with IE open in front of them on the library's home page).
  • Why's the internet broken? (This is frequently asked because they don't know what a URL is or that they have to type in an actual address like www.yahoomail.com. Instead they'll type in "yahoo" in the address bar and wonder what's wrong.)
  • How do I get to Google?
It just goes to show you that like cars or women, people use them regularly and have no fucking clue how or why they work and couldn't care less.

And they're all looking at PORN!!!!!!!!!!!! Well, at least 1 billion.

How do I get Google Porn on Six?

LOL

How do I get Google Porn on Six?
Easy, and this method works around porn filters at libraries and institutions worldwide-just google any phrase you like, japanese school girls, teen ass, camel toe, etc. and select "images". You can view all the hits as thumbnails, enlarge them to full screen or go directly to the porn site offering them. It's a loophole in the porn filtering software that 99% of institutions don't close for various reasons. Either way, you can get all the porn you want delivered to you by our good friend Google. That is, assuming you can find Google...lol

The internet is a series of tubes.

================== FOOD FOR THOUGHT =======================

The internet is the ' mark of the beast '.

The symbol ' V or W ', pronounced ' vav ', in the Hebrew Alphabet denotes the number 6.

Hence WWW = 666.

Hang on people as modern technology makes it available for everyone it will probably become more obvious.

Why do you think they call it the " WORLD WIDE WEB " .
