So in a couple of weeks I'll be moving to a new crack den and subsequently have transferred over electricity, etc to the new place. I purchased TWC's ULTIMATE FUCK YEAH internet package (50 down 5 up). Anywho, the guy tells me the modem is also a wireless router. "I don't want a wireless modem kind sir, I'd rather do my internets !!!1111!11!11 myself, I have my own wireless router," says I. He replies that a TIER 3 peep can disable the wireless and a parrot will fly into my room and shower me with candy blah blah blah. I have a kick ass router and am now on the hunt for an equally kick ass modem. If any of you have suggestions please chime in. Has to be a DOCSIS 3.0. Looking at this one: Amazon.com : ARRIS / Motorola SB6121 SURFboard DOCSIS 3.0 Cable Modem - Retail Packaging : Electronics

Oh, and here's a good article: How to Beat Time Warner's Bullsh*t Modem Rental Fee

Thanks!

Well I would recommended a modem or two, but you have to use one from their "pre-approved list" from here;

Sucks, but depending on the zip you enter they usually have some decent equipment on the list. I'm a fan of Cisco myself. Motorola isn't bad, but firmware upgrades suck balls if you can even get them. Come to think of it both are really terrible about updating and/or friendly interfaces. Flip a coin on either for me.

Thanks Bob. I've been looking at their pre-approved stuff on Amazon and the $ isn't too bad, just not looking forward to the inevitable headache dealing with them. I did find this somewhat handy page as well: Buy Your Modem | Time Warner Cable

The only real concern renting or not (mostly renting) is that the modem is decent. If it has a wireless router built into it who cares? Take the antenna's off and ignore it. Use your own wireless router just like you would wether or not it had one. If they were renting an awesome DOCSIS 3 modem for 4 bucks a month that would be an awesome steel. But yeah good luck with that.

As far as dealing with them you basically have to call them up and give them the mac address. The only complication is after informing them you bought your own the next month you get charged a rental fee. Then 7 years later they finally apologize for it and refund you nothing of 7 years worth of fees. And people say buying is better... LMAO

Yeah, I can see that being the main possibility lol

I hear they give out pretty shitty modems these days. Mine is from an era when there were like 2 modems in existence. I joke I kid but the damn thing is 10 years old. If my internet gets any faster or if they finally drop support I will need a new one.

if it is bridged mode then you can still use your router no?

The one you linked has only 4 downstream channels which is not the full D3 spec, the better ones have 8 downstream channels. 4 is fine for 50mbps though.

The modem you listed is what I have with Comcast. It works great. I have to power cycle it....once every 6 months if that.

God it sucks to live in the U.S. internet-wise... such ancient systems and ridiculously bureaucratic profit schemes...

yes we are ranked 9th or 10th in the world for internet speeds now I think. 'Merica

You can ignore the little man who lives in the little country. I mean its easy to install high speed networks in places that had nothing to begin with.
