I have a spare fan, and want to prolong the life of my modem by trying to reduce temps on it. Was wondering if anyone had any suggestions on how I can run power to my 3pin 140mm without having to run it to my PC. @RainMotorsports , i remember seeing you have a fan on yours at one point, got any advice for me?

Modem or router? Your talking about my ASUS RT-N16:

Good luck with whatever lol. Mine happened to fit a very rare 80x10mm and I did it not only because the router is known to overheat but because I was doing other mods such as a hard drive.

Most routers are 12v so you can probably just solder the 2 wires to the inside of the jack. If you really want to you can easily mount a fan speed knob maybe off a pcie plate mount or something which is common. Solder that lead to the power jack and plug the fan into it. Chances are the fan is going outside and ugly!

If you want to go crazy on it and make a dedicated router cooling system and are comfortable with electrical work you can convert an old PSU into an AC->DC adapter, tons of videos on how to do it on youtube

Can just use a 4 amp 12v monitor ac adapter which quite often has the same plug as the router and just get your 12v from the built in jack. Unless you need other voltages. I run a monitor ac adapter to power my router but I did use a separate power board.

now i feel like i thought too much on this issue. this is a definite +1, but make sure you get the stronger one, most are just BS. the biggest fan and greatest speed!
Actually a big fan at a slow speed works great
