What are the GPUs used in the GeForce GTX 580 x2 (Fermi) and the Radeon HD 6990?

I just wanted know because I could swing by Microcenter and pick up a new videocard(s) tomorrow.

As far as I know they're just underclocked GTX 580 cores and AMD 6970 cores.

Cayman GPU for the 6900 series cards. 6990 is a dual but a couple of 6950s in crossfire is pretty fast for much less$$$.

If I were you I would either get 2x6950's unlockable's and actually unlock them to the 6970. If you dont want to go with to 580. Remember about purchasing these cards though if you can hold off ATi is releasing there HD7000 series here soon.

Last I heard was end of November, first of December for the 28nm cards...I'd definitely wait unless your current one is broken.

I guess I'll wait then. I'll just do what I always do. Upgrade every other generation. I usually get the best configuration so it will last me for a while and still run games on their highest setting.

Yeah, the new cards should kick the shit out of what's on the market right now. That said, AMD looks to be the only ones coming out with them this year. Nvidia is said to have taped out their high end card, but are behind schedule and it could be as late as April before we see them on the market.
