Windows Experience assessment

Lol my desktop is 5.8 because i have old hard drives... around 4 years old... 7.6 for cpu, 7.6 for graphics, 7.7 for ram...with windows 7

Yeah switching to ssd is easy and probably the best single performance upgrade that is reasonable.

I havent done it because i would have to buy windows again... dont know where my disc or key is.. that and reinstalling programs is annoying to deal with.. but if it really is that dramatic of an upgrade ill start pricing drives out. I currently have 3 wd 500's

Why not just image your drive and write that image to an SSD? That way you don't have to reinstall anything. There are programs that let you use a trial version to image a drive...and done!

Also, call MS and they can get the win license number for you. Every time I've called them they're surprisingly easy to deal with...as long as you actually paid for that copy of Win.

This is where I'd like to plug PC backup software | True Image by Acronis Works great in my experience :)

Acronis is user friendly and imaging the drive is simple. You just create and image, hook up the SSD, and write the image to the SSD and that's it other than making sure the SSD becomes your boot drive in the bios. It really is easy to do, Acronis makes it painless these days.

I ll give that a whirl. Still going to be a bit before i do anything. I kinda has no access to bank account when on the road.

I've had success with Acronis on 3 different machines. Even my old ass dell laptop worked like a champ when I installed the SSD from the image.

Just upgraded to Win8 pro in 25 minutes flat. Win8 assessment is now 8.1 versus 7.9 with Win 7. I don't know what people complain about. So far, it's very similar to Win7 since I transported my settings. In fact, it looks exactly like Win7 but runs shit faster. I'll have to hop in BF4 beta with it now and see if there's a difference there too.

Sixer go buy a windows 8 machine. You will probably smash it before the end of the year. It is a completely different experience than installing windows 8 on an existing machine. You CANT enter the EFI "Bios" without first booting into your not working windows install. F8 during bootup has been changed to Shift + F8 and the window to hit it is timed in milliseconds (read damn near impossible to ever utilize). Basically your machine gets fucked the best thing you can do is pull the drive copy your files and send it back to the OEM because Microsoft decided it wasn't cool to boot straight into the bios or make safemode... accessible. I don't care how they fuck over their tablet customers but hell Google wasn't dumb enough to do that to Android...

My complaint is they for no reason changed peoples work flow. Then blamed the windows team saying it was not decisions that came from the top. Pure Lies, Microsoft wants the same UI on all platforms and intends to KILL desktop support at the earliest possible moment. They could have left the start menu in and made it an option. I currently run NOTHING from the Metro UI and intend not to until I am forced. I should not have to turn 3rd party software developers for a feature that I have been using for 18 years.

Using their new UI without a touch screen is also a bit of a pain when you actually use it as it is intended.

The 8.1 update(will be public next week) puts part of the start menu back. It is better. I have not had any issues with Win 8 it is fine. Games run without issues.I will post some tips and optimizations when I get some time.

I use Belarc to review and backup all the installed programs and keys on my machine. You can use it to get your Win7 key as well as any other serial numbers you have used (MS Office for example).

Belarc Advisor - Free Personal PC Audit, for software, hardware and security configuration information on your computer. Software license management, IT asset management, cyber security audits, and more.

Sounds good, optimization tips are always welcome.

I kept having the beta crash after a few minutes on me since I did the upgrade. I updated PB manually but still same thing. I think I'll delete the files in the PB folder on my machine and then do the update again. I'm certain it's PB that's the problem. There's no way the game would crash after 3 minutes ever single time if it was anything else.

But...I do like Win 8 which I didn't think I would. It is annoying some things are on the desktop and some in Metro but it's a minor annoyance. More than anything BF4 runs better and faster and shit just feels smoother now with any application.

Button, not menu. You will still have to rely on 3rd part software to have a start menu. Lenovo for example is shipping their solution preinstalled.
