AMD R9 290x Reviews (NDA Lifted)

So, it's just what we've seen previously. The MSRP for the card is $549 probably more for the BF3 bundle. At 1920x1080 it lags behind the the GTX 780 and Titan but does better at 4k resolutions. I'm quite happy with my 120hz 27" monitor that runs at 1920x1080 so this is nothing exciting for me. If they have 144hz monitors in 27" that run higher resolutions in the near future then this might be worth a look but for now, no thanks.

What I also find interesting is the game performance seems better with this GPU using a 4770k cpu versus the 3930K in the BF series.

Without even looking any further yet let me say I TOLD THEM MFers SO:

When your down to 1080P games will be back and forth and that the AMD will rule the high res and multi monitor but Nvidia will be better in anything under 1080P (yes people still own 1680x1050 and 1600x900 screens).

Now let me check more than one game.... damn... Anandtech's benches don't look as close together.

Wow that's only at 55% fan and full load is 95 degrees C

Them damn reference coolers are always loud as hell. Did not know what to expect with the new silicon but apparently its inline with the 280X going up which the custom cooled ASUS 280X hits like 84C on 60% fan.

Damn it i wanna hear more about the regular 290. Though I am sure it will be the same price as a 770 and in that case Id rather lose a few frames and buy the nvidia. Pretty dead set on the R9 280X at the moment. Sucks for 290X buyers that not only won't they be able to get it at BF4's launch but the 3rd party coolers apparently won't be around till the end of november. I have always have an itchy trigger finger and AMD is holding back. Then again as usual part of this launch is relying on drivers which are not even done yet.

Holy shit, 283W power consumption (the highest single-GPU card in the history of cards, apparently, even beating my GTX 480), and 95C load.

Prepare for meltdown.

At least the price is nice, so MAYBE we will see a 780 or Titan sale for Xmas? Still waiting to even see them on sale anywhere, for any discount.

The 280X is rated for 190 and unlocked and under load can easily reach 300 the Toxic card from Sapphire calls for 300 but if you want to shit bricks you can run furmark and get it to an unreal 500 watts.

Do they have waterblocks for new 280/290 ? or is it all air cooled?

The 290X is air cooled reference only on launch day. The 280X i haven't checked but one might assume the reference cards will take a 7970 block.

I really have no clue what card to buy for BF4 now!? it comes down to 4 cards though. 770,780,r9 280x and r9 290x.
And then I have a board that only does PCIe 2.0 and an ageing AMD 1055T. I'm gonna be a G note deep by the time I upgrade half of what I want :(

PCI-E 2.0 shouldn't really change your path here for single gpu. If you want to upgrade and save some money and can deal with AMD ownersip I would grab the 280X. The whole selection seems like budget would be a big part of the decision. Being an Nvidia guy I would go for the 770 but then again the 290X might be a deal for an AMD fan.

I think my 770 has been my single best card purchased. I haven't felt like I overpaid for the top tier, but I haven't run into anything yet where I was like "damn...shouldn't spent the extra green." Which I have normally hit by now.

If you're air cooled in a warm environment stay the fuck away from the 290. I'm in TX and 95C would raise my room temp by about 7F while playing-no thanks. Unless you plan to water cool the 290x I wouldn't bother. But, then again as I said I live in TX. Somebody up north might not care.

Also, I just saw that the 290X is $549 by itself and we saw the $579 with BF4 but all of them are reference cards right now. If anybody's buying them, I"d give it 3-4 months till AMD allows custom coolers. Sapphire is very good with custom air cooling on their cards.

Kinda worried if I move down south into a dump of a house like I plan to. The PC shall be in whatever room has the best window air conditioner. Right now I enjoy freezing cold temps to cool my PC hell if the AC isn't enough I'll open a window.
