FYI;

Thought I would post this so that if anyone else has problems they will know. I was having many problems with BF BC2 ranging from Lock ups, CTD's, and BSOD's. Tried many things to fix, remove and reinstall of the game, updated mobo, vid card drivers, etc, etc.

However the one driver I did not update was the sound. I am using the on-board sound, because I have lost over half of my hearing so I did not and usually don't care about the sound of a game. Anyways I updated the audio on my Asus M4A79XTD-EVO and all is well now.

Good to hear Bob. Glad you got things working :).

That's the only reason I use a sound card, because I can make it so much louder than the integrated sound. Then again, it does sound better in addition to being louder, but that's a secondary concern. Good news the update fixed your problems with that though.

I have noted that my new machine is very low in-game. Drivers are up to date and I did a little tweaking in Realtek which brought it up some but not where I'm used to. Need sound card but after spending $1700 bones on the new machine! I'll pick one up soon enough.

Asus onboard sound has always sucked; I would try getting a sound card.

Check ebay, Red, I got a $200.00+ sound card for $90.00 shipped brand new still in the original box and wrapped. Some guy was going to build a new pc and never did.

It's sad that I'm recommending a Creative card with John "Fatal1ty" Wendel's name on it, nontheless, but this is what I'd buy today:

If you want to go a bit cheaper with the only difference seemingly being a cool metal cover and X-Ram support (which few games support really and the benefits are really nil in this day and age), you can go with this. It still supports EAX 5.0 which is the most important imo:

Don't forget 8% bing cashback if buying the second.

I loved Aureal back in the day and they were doing a lot more meaningful things for audio - things which were probably ahead of their time... so I was really sad to see them bought out and dissimilated by Creative:

Creative has basically kept sound technology relatively stagnant for the last 10 years, has kept prices insanely high for the underdeveloped chips they provide, and has fucked customers several times with bad drivers and unresolved issues. Suffice it to say I have a creative card now and it's problem-free, but there are plenty of people with severe problems (especially with nForce chipsets) out there.

I can't believe it's been 10 years already. That's what happens when you don't have a competitor in a market I suppose. I still mourn Aureal every time I think about gaming audio.

If you keep checking ebay you can score sweet deals, but it can take time which may not pay off. If you want to buy now, I'd get one of the two above.

The things I personally look at are: PCI-E, EAX 5.0 support, good quality components, connectivity on back panel.

You can look at Auzentech, but they only have 1 card which is PCI-E and supports EAX 5.0 (the "Hometheater HD" I think) and it's $200+. The Prelude is perfect, but it's only PCI. The Bravura is EAX 4.0 only.

How are you gonna hook him up? Do you get a discount on buy.com or something?!

If I tell you I have to kill you..lol
I built a computer for my parents over Christmas & I threw that sound card in there for shits and giggles; it was laying around my house for almost a year. The motherboard that I used had on board audio; all they do is surf the web & word docs.

I actually have a PCI version and I'm actually looking to switch to a pcie - it will help me reorganize the layout of my cards better. How much do you want for it? Is it the Fatal1ty version with x-ram and metal shroud?
