First overclocks on the 4770K

It helps on other things. It sure does not hurt anything to overclock.
My thing is that how much does it help with a mild over clock? 7%? Am I going to notice that editing or opening files? 1, maybe 2 fps during games? Nope. So why would I want a 78C cpu that's making my room a sweat shop for a difference I won't even notice.

The only time you'll notice a difference with these cpus is above 4.7ghz, but good luck getting one there. Anyway, I was just pointing out that there's no reason to make things hotter than they are in the summer for no real reason than "because".

Overclocked CPUs help on CPU intensive games like Civ V or .... ummmm .... GTA 4?

Those are the only CPU intensive games i know about off the top of my head.

So I can't seem to stay stable above 4.2ghz regardless of the voltage I apply. Anyone have any suggestions?

Id talk to the Haswell guys on Overclock.net. Sandy Bridge for example had a weird way with the PLL voltage, lowering it actually gained me another 200 Mhz but it was alot of runs to figure out what worked for it. Generally cooling on the high end is the only hope past a certain point. But if the only factor your dealing with is multiplier overclock then I would find out if there are any oddities with that cpu.

Doc, are you running DDR on XMP profile or by manual settings?

Manul at default timings for that ram and at 2133 (I think). It's rated for 2400 but haven't bothered bumping it up.

Usually going above 4.2 you just need to tweak stuff. That is why I am still at 4.2 as I had the same issue. I will push it when I have time.

So I disagree about no gain from overclocking. I do video conversions and stuff like that and always use as much CPU as I have. you buy a good motherboard , memory, components, and especially a good case with cooling there is no reason not to overclock. That is the point of buying high end stuff. Going to 4 GHz is simple and almost all the mobo manufacturers have preset configuration for that. Going 4.2 - 4.7 will take some skill.

The main things as we know is heat. 78c is hot but within tolerance of the CPU. I agree I would not run it that hot but you can. I never go above 60c playing BF4 even when my room is warm. I can probably get 4.5 out of mine without issue. It is a personal choice and even if you do not overclock the processor is solid and will run great. Now keep in mind this from a guy that has a 580hp car and just bumped it to 615hp. Modding is in my blood. :)
