I was looking at buying at a reader, but then I saw how all of them are "locked down" in various ways, so basically fuck that shit.

You'd be better off with a more open tablet maybe? (Microsoft? lulz).
 
Heat, you could buy any random Android tablet and root or then put a custom ROM on it. I have a Samsung Galaxy Tab 2 that's rooted and a first generation Kindle Fire that's rooted. The Kindle is essentially just a regular Android tablet now instead of having all of that Amazon bullshit on it.
